Venezuela’s Machado presents Trump with her Nobel Peace Prize during White House meeting

Trump confirmed later on social media that Machado had left the medal for him to keep, and he said it was an honour to meet her.

Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado on Thursday said she presented her Nobel Peace Prize medal to US President Donald Trump at the White House and discussed her country’s future with the US leader, even as he has questioned her credibility to lead her country.

Machado's extraordinary gesture to Trump, which the Nobel Institute has said can not be done, followed a rapidly evolving series of developments in Venezuela after an audacious US military raid captured then-President Nicolás Maduro and his wife and brought them to New York to stand trial on drug trafficking charges two weeks ago.

During the visit, Machado gave Trump her Nobel Peace Prize medal "as a recognition for his unique commitment to our freedom," she told reporters outside the US Capitol on Thursday.

Right.

This means that President Trump is now on track to someday being a "Double Nobel Prize-Winner."

They’ll probably say he already has one as an excuse.

Of course you can sell or give away the medal. That does not, of course, make the buyer or giftee a Nobel Prize recipient. That’s what the Nobel Committee said.

President Trump is on the right side in this.

Yes.
If my father earned a Purple Heart in WWII and chose to give it to me, he could do so legally and without any issue. I would appreciate the gesture. However, the U.S. government would not recognize me as the award’s recipient. As a result, I would not be entitled to the official honors or benefits associated with it.

I think she’s probably trying to influence Trump to support her as the legitimate president of Venezuela. Trump, meanwhile, simply wants a stable, compliant and hopefully not evil government in the country. Actually, installing a new president carries a host of responsibility for whatever happens after that. The people with the guns have not changed. Likely, they’d rise up and do some bad things to maintain their superior position. Attempting to install her as president requires a huge military presence and a lot of gruella fighting. I’m sorry, but Trump’s chosen path of leaving the present government in place is the only practical solution. By controlling the money supply and what can get into the country, the US can, over time reduce the military forces in Venezuela and eventually that government will fall.

“I think she’s probably trying to influence Trump to support her as the legitimate president of Venezuela.”

Of course that’s true. It could be 100% of her reason. Or it could be 50%, with the other 50% being that she truly believes he deserves it. He did/does deserve it, plus she knows it’s huge for him to be her champion in her country.

Regardless of her motivation it was, in my opinion, a BOSS move. I applaud her. I hope she does well. Regardless Venezuela will not be safe for her for a long time.

This is so sad and pathetic.

Anyone with an iota of class would have politely declined. Instead, Trump proudly accepts someone else's Nobel Prize like the world's oldest toddler getting a participation trophy at a T-ball tournament.

Ditto.

“Venezuela will not be safe for her for a long time.”

Maybe never. If she does rise to take over the Presidency (and I hope she does), she’ll be living as Trump does, i.e., with a target on her back forever.

Send that thing to the Trump lab for chemical testing. Scan it, x-ray it and put it under a microscope just to be sure. It could be a surveillance device or something worse. Just because you’re paranoid doesn’t mean they’re not out to get you. /s(?)

47 will get a 2nd one when he forces Ukraine to agree to all of Russia’s terms. 47 does not care a wit for Ukrainian freedom, he cares only for real estate deals

The Academy Awards didn’t like the fact that there was a thriving trade in their awards mostly from deceased stars so they instituted that going forward winners could not sell their awards without giving the Academy itself the first right to purchase. Winners have to sign that agreement before receiving their awards.

Really sad that such a heroic woman has to debase herself this way to get aid for her country.

This is probably a giant relief for Trump, who has been keen on winning the Nobel Prize as part of his legacy. This means more than Obama’s fake win, which he got for doing absolutely nothing.

Trump accepted a token gesture graciously. If you think he believes he has a Nobel, you are a fool.
Actually, I think you are a fool either way.
