Summary
New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani announced on December 23, 2025, that retired FDNY EMS Chief Lillian Bonsignore will become the next commissioner of the Fire Department of New York (FDNY), effective January 1, 2026, upon his inauguration.
Bonsignore, a 31-year FDNY veteran, brings extensive experience from the department's Emergency Medical Services (EMS) division. She began her career as an EMT in 1991, rose through the ranks, and served as Chief of EMS Operations from 2019 to 2022, leading the city's emergency medical response during the COVID-19 pandemic. She retired in 2022 but is returning to public service for this role.
This appointment makes Bonsignore:
- The second woman to lead the FDNY (following Laura Kavanagh, who served from 2022–2024).
- The first openly gay commissioner in FDNY history.
- The first uniformed woman (rising from EMT ranks) to achieve this position.
Mamdani praised her as a leader who "cares about their work because she did it herself, who understands every detail and will fight tirelessly to empower FDNY and make it the best firefighting force in the world.
"Although Bonsignore has no direct firefighting experience, she expressed confidence: "I know the job. I know what the firefighters need, and I can translate that to this administration who's willing to listen. I know what EMS needs—I have been EMS for 30 plus years."Her management style has been compared to that of NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch (note: often spelled "Tisch"), a no-nonsense leader who is remaining in her post under the new administration.
Former Commissioner Laura Kavanagh endorsed the pick, calling Bonsignore "one of the strongest leaders I have ever worked alongside.
"Bonsignore's priorities include improving response times, public education, prevention, and advocating for pay equity between EMS personnel and firefighters.

In other words, zero fire experience. She's only a paramedic. That's like appointing a dispatcher to be chief of police. Beyond stupid.

He, she, It is a "trailblazer." Where that "trail" has been, and where that "trail" will lead, well...... NO ONE wants to follow.
