The City Council’s far-left majority is pushing the Big Apple into a “communist dystopia” with Stalinesque legislation designed to control how private property is sold — and penalizing owners $30,000 if they resist.
The “Community Opportunity for Purchase Act,” or COPA, forces sellers to let “community land trusts” and other nonprofits providing affordable housing make first offers to buy residential buildings with at least three units once they’re on the market – and then match competing private-sector offers.
The bill, sponsored by Brooklyn Councilwoman Sandy Nurse, was introduced in May 2024 and has gained steam in recent months after Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani won the June Democratic primary before cruising to victory on Nov. 4.
As of Friday, 32 of the 51 Council members had signed on as sponsors, more than the 26 votes needed to pass, and just shy of the 34 needed to override a mayoral veto.
“COPA is yet another attack on private real-estate ownership in this city,” said Council Minority Leader Joann Ariola (R-Queens).
“We’re sliding headfirst into a communist dystopia where the government and their apparatchik developers own all the property, and the rest of us get forced into perpetual rentorship, and this legislation is helping to get us there even quicker.”
Nurse told The Post she has “high hopes” the bill will get to the floor for a vote before the legislative session expires at year’s end “given the growing support” for it “with the rising cost of rent and the dream of homeownership further out of reach.”
“COPA is another tool to grow affordable housing and keep families here,” she said.
The bill would install new bureaucratic hurdles for already beseiged property owners. It is modeled after similar programs already in place in other left-wing cities like Washington, D.C., and San Francisco.

And so it begins…”Escape from New York - The Sequel”!
I will be entertained watching NYC burn itself to the ground.
The bill is antisemitic
The problem is this will more than likely have a ripple effect throughout the country.
This promise of “affordability” is just a new spin in obamas BS promises like “if you like your doctor you can keep your doctor”.
NOTHING is free, but most people can’t wrap their heads around that truth.
By the time the sheeple catch on this affordability lie will have spread to other places.
All of this has a long history of “success” behind the Soviet Union’s “Iron Curtain.” NOT ! ! !
Communism - the system that ALWAYS fails because the RIGHT PEOPLE have not YET been in charge of it !
I want a million dollar unit for 200K.
Here you go, New York. You voted for this.
There might be a LOT of affordable housing in America TODAY if we had not imported at least 20 million more PARASITE foreigners within just the last few years.
>> By the time the sheeple catch on this affordability lie will have spread to other places.
They’ve got their eye on food, for sure... MahMonkey has already said as much.
Legal Status of Communism in the United States
Communist Control Act of 1954
The Communist Control Act of 1954 outlawed the Communist Party USA and criminalized membership in or support for the party. This law was enacted during the Cold War, reflecting fears that communists aimed to overthrow the U.S. government.
Key Provisions
Outlawing the Communist Party: The act declared the Communist Party and its affiliates illegal.
Criminalization of Membership: It made it a crime to be a member of or support communist organizations.
Restrictions on Representation: Members of communist organizations were prohibited from holding certain public offices.
Not that appears to be enforced by any measure.
And so it begins…”Escape from New York - The Sequel”!

“The problem is this will more than likely have a ripple effect throughout the country.”
I do believe people around here would not accept such nonsense. If you just let communist bureaucrats tell you how and to whom you can sell your property then you have lost. Mess with people too much and find out. We have limits.
If you are a renter, you can move to a place where income over fixed costs is more favorable to you.
If you are a homeowner, you don’t want your place to fall in price.
No one has yet to define what an ‘affordable house’ is.
I’d imagine in Beverly Hills the definition would be quite different from Chicago’s Southside..........
“The City Council’s far-left majority is pushing the Big Apple into a “communist dystopia””
Why do journalists or so called journalists insist, INSIST every freaking time to beat around the bush when it comes to these pieces of rat filth? They are COMMUNISTS! WHY is that so hard to say?? I am SO sick of this crap!
It’s either “far left” or “progressive” or “socialist”...they are freakin’ COMMUNISTS! COMMUNISTS!!! SAY IT! SAY IT! Why is it so hard to write that sentence like this?
“The City Council’s communist majority is pushing the Big Apple into a “communist dystopia””
Communism, you know, the same political system the USA fought againt in the Korean War, Vietnam war, cold war, and these DOMESTIC ENEMIES are doing everything they can to subject the USA under this vile system and a big reason they are getting away with it is because the media refuses to properly identify them!
Why not just create a “community land trust” or other non profit and then, for a modest fee, make $1 initial offers with no later bids. That lets the landlords comply with the kleptocracy while undermining the commies.
So, your NGO would like a mortgage.
The mayor says he wants to make housing cheaper.
Who are we to say he lied to the voters?
We obviously can’t give you a mortgage for the full sales price amount.
Based on 30% of the tenants’ incomes who are not receiving government subsidies, we can give you a mortgage for 42% of the sales price.
