The most climate-friendly groceries might not be in the supermarket

The pollution from food is sneaky. Because the apple sitting on your kitchen counter isn’t really causing any harm.

But chances are good that you didn’t pick it from a tree in your backyard. It required land and water to grow, machines to harvest and process, packaging to ship, trucks to transport and often refrigerators to store. Much of that process releases planet-warming greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.

That’s why the global food system makes up roughly a third of worldwide, human-caused greenhouse gas emissions.

Meanwhile, roughly a third of the U.S. food supply is lost or wasted without being eaten, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. It might never get harvested, it might spoil in transit or the grocery store might reject it for being the wrong size or color. That’s a big reason why some consumers are looking for less-wasteful alternatives ranging from farmers markets to delivery services for produce that didn’t meet supermarket size or appearance standards.

“There’s a whole breadth of opportunities to purchase food,” said Julia Van Soelen Kim, food systems adviser with the University of California Cooperative Extension.

And during the week of Thanksgiving, this decision is especially high stakes because lots of grocery shoppers are buying for extra guests, and more food can mean a bigger climate impact.

Here are tips for reducing impact by shopping beyond the grocery store.

You don't feed your guests. Problem solved.

Oh good freakin’ grief give it a damned rest already.

I’m sick to death of all this negative news around the holidays.

Yesterday my local commie news was warning about food born illnesses at Thanksgiving, day before that it was that there is a turkey shortage.

Can’t stand to have people actually enjoy the holidays.....got to try and ruin it. SMH

Just a useless filler article like one used to see in airline magazines or company magazines, useless, meaningless, just words.

Horrible humans gathering up in November to “gas up” the Universe.

My family is busy prepping for the ritual turkey sacrifice. 😁

And if everyone were to switch to eating only vegetables and legumes, AP would gripe about increased methane emissions.

The most climate friendly protein is the white tail deer living within 2 miles of your house.
There are no GMOs in the meat unless they are eating cow corn.

It is a heck of a lot better than ANYTHING bought at Whole Foods.

Peruse the headlines and stories right here on FR over the last hour and you come the conclusion that I have reached.

Many Americans have lost their frk’n minds.

Basically, her solution is to grow it yourself or go to local farmers’ markets. Does she realize what would happen if a large chunk of the population tried to get its food from local farmers, or grow it themselves, rather than relying on mass farming? It would be incredibly inefficient and would result in more energy use. That is the fallacy of arguments like what are in this article. Industrial farming uses a lot of energy. But dividing that up into a bunch of local production would use a lot more.

If I planted an apple tree for the dozen or so apples I would eat in a year, how much carbon is produced by the decaying fruit that never gets harvested?

What kind of fresh fruits and vegetables will we be getting from our local (above the Mason-Dixon) Farmer’s markets from November - April?

Perhaps she thinks we can all go into home canning and put up our needs for the winter.

These are the same people who would complain they can’t get fresh strawberries or kiwi 10 months of the year if their recommendations were implemented.
