The “aunt” who Zohran Mamdani said was too afraid to wear her hijab on the subways after 9/11 is actually a deceased distant cousin, he clarified Monday.
The socialist mayoral front-runner made the revelation during a press conference after critics seized on his story, sharing photos on social media of an aunt of his without a hijab.
“I was speaking about Zehra fuhi, my father’s cousin, who passed away a few years ago,” Mamdani told reporters. Fuhi means paternal aunt in Urdu and Hindi. Questions began to mount on social media after a tearful Mamdani on Friday recalled how his “aunt” made the painful decision to stop taking the subway in New York City after facing Islamophobia in the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks.

As much as I don't like Mamdani, I can't really beat him up for referring to this person as an aunt. Many people, in many cultures might refer to their father's cousin as an aunt, sometimes even people who aren't related. Does Mamdani really speak Urdu? Did this woman actually fear wearing a hijab?
At the time period of 9/11 his aunt was in Tanzania. It’s also reported she’s never been known to wear Muslim bagwear.

That is quite the conundrum. Does she go out in public wearing her hijab and risk getting nasty looks or does she go out without wearing her hijab and risk getting beaten to a pulp by her husband? 🤔

The important point was that she wasn’t in NYC or apparently even in this country. Once that was discovered, why wasn’t that the main topic instead of what the younger people in the family called her?
