China Wants Foreign Scientists. The Public Says No, Thanks.

Since Beijing announced a new visa to attract young science and technology graduates, a backlash has erupted online, forcing the government to respond.

When the Chinese government announced a new visa to attract young science and technology talent, it advertised the move as another step toward becoming the leading scientific power, one to which people from around the globe would flock.

To many in China, it was a gross mistake.

In the days before and since Oct. 1, when the visa was supposed to come into effect, commenters have accused the government of inviting foreigners to steal jobs from Chinese people, at a time when young people are finding it harder than ever to land work. They have suggested that foreigners are being blindly worshiped, a longstanding national sore point.

Prominent influencers have also stoked nationalism or xenophobia, claiming that China will be overrun by outsiders. After Henry Huiyao Wang, the president of the Center for China and Globalization, a research group in Beijing, praised the new visa, people on social media called him a race traitor, and their posts were shared thousands of times.

Platforms have been especially flooded by racist comments about Indians, after Indian news outlets reported on the Chinese visa as a possible alternative to the highly popular H1-B visa in the United States, which now comes with a $100,000 fee.

The backlash grew so fierce that the Chinese Communist Party’s official mouthpiece, People’s Daily, published an editorial calling criticisms of the visa “outlandish” and accusing opponents of misleading the public. Hu Xijin, the former editor in chief of Global Times, a nationalist tabloid, defended the policy, saying in a video that he saw fewer foreigners in China than in Japan or South Korea.

“To be honest, it’s...

There is no political opposition in China. Any semblance of opposition is something that is orchestrated by the govt to create the illusion there is opposition. Does this mean the Chinese public are in favor ? No. My guess is the proposal was for the benefit of countries China wants to improve ties with, mainly India, followed by the illusion there is opposition and then backing down. Their govt was never serious about it.

Very few foreigners, particularly highly-educated ones, want to work in China, especially for state-run laboratories and companies. May sound attractive to the uninitiated, but you will always regret it in the end.

Language is a huge barrier. Even if you are accommodated in the office, you will NEVER become one of the group.

Once your knowledge / experience is drained from you, you will be cast aside.

Don’t forget its still a marxist society, so many state-security people WILL be keeping constant tabs on you.

I saw somewhere a report that China is hiring retired Navy pilots to teach them how to do carrier landings. I wonder if that’s true.

China’s average IQ is about 107, one of if not THE highest in the world.

Importing tech people would not appear to make sense for them, in comparison to home growing.

Note US avg IQ is 99.

Asia tends to dominate.

Plus, if you really are creative a communist countryis the last place to work. By gov’mt fiat they OWN every idea you come up with — regardless of where. There is no such thing as intellectual property — except as a label for the CCP to steal stuff when US companies manufacture stuff in China.

When I was in China, a group of people asked me how dissidence works in the United States. I told them, "An old saying has it that the squeaky wheel gets the grease." They laughed, and then one said, "In China the saying is that the nail that rises from the floor is pounded down".

The Chinese people do dissent; but, they have to be very careful regarding what they say, how they say it, and where they say it.

No foreign men would want to work in China.

Too few available women, if any.

But the announcement is fake, since China doesn’t need foreign scientists. They have done pretty well with spying and stealing technology and research projects.

I suppose Trump has made it a bit harder for China to spy and steal our technology, which might explain China wanting the scientists to come there, if they really meant it.

America and Japan and S. Korea and other western countries, are the research centers for China.

Like everything coming out of China, that's a huge exaggeration. Did you know that they also had the fastest growing economy in the world, at times growing at 10% or more?

Think about it...

With high IQs, why does China have one of the poorest populations in the world, and why would anybody with just an adequate IQ and education, still believe that communism is the way to go?

Dumb, is what it is.

Smart people don't do stupid things. Even Russia is learning that lesson now.

Because they have a very large population, which has its own problems related to wealth. At this time the wealth is China is highly concentrated in the big cities, being retained by the smartest and hardest working. Same as here.

How does one exaggerate an explicit and specific number.

In this case from a specific measurement.

How does one exaggerate such a thing. The number is what it is. And don’t go off talking about other test regimens.

The number is the number. How does one exaggerate a quoted number?

The number is a number, and the number can be made up, or the actual IQs for a country can be increased, easily, just to make your country look good.

Your defense for the Chinese IQ number is nonsense.

Are you smart enough to realize that, an average IQ is impossible to arrive at, with a population of 1.4 billion people?

Now I'm left wondering about your IQ level.

China will never be a global hegemon for two reasons:

1. Nobody trusts China. Not even the Chinese.
2. The Chinese think everyone else is inferior to them, and rarely bother to hide that sentiment.
