The controversial solution Long Beach has picked to battle shoplifters

Tired of rampant shoplifting scaring away citizens and shoppers, Long Beach is trying to force stores to add staff and reduce dependence on self-checkout.

The beachfront city, with a population of around half a million, last month started requiring major food and pharmacy retailers to do more to stop theft. So far, the measures have led to a heated debate and longer lines. Employees like the new law. The retail chains warn that the restrictions could backfire. Shoppers are confused.

The city’s “Safe Stores are Staffed Stores” ordinance is the first of its kind in the country. It requires large stores to increase the number of employees relative to self-checkout stands and also puts a limit on the number of items and types of goods that can be rung up at self-checkout.

It is the latest flash point in a national debate about how to handle what some see as an epidemic of shoplifting. This issue is affecting the quality of life for consumers who are tired of witnessing theft or dealing with measures to stop it, such as locked-up shelves.

The Long Beach ordinance will protect employees and shoppers from dangerous situations, said Matt Bell, the secretary-treasurer of UFCW 324, the union that represents grocery workers.

“The checkers and the cashiers are on the front lines of this,” he said. “It really is necessary to provide them safety and security and better staffing.” The city said it passed the ordinance to “advance...”

Because arresting and prosecuting shoplifters who steal less than a designated amount is out of the question.

Let the staff be armed. The shoplifters are not afraid of anything else.

Isn’t the city government ordering the placing of unarmed clerks in positions to serve as a security force, this seems to be getting into a questionable area of putting a businesses employees in danger by city order to reduce crime and restrain criminals, which isn’t the role of these clerks.

Our local Walmarts have overhead cameras that watch you checkout and the AI alerts the attendants when you put things in a bag without scanning it or when you obscure its view of what you are doing.

It seems to me to be about keeping union employees jobs instead of shoplifting.

After “self checkout” the store will be empty. Hard to believe there’s no money in retail, but there it is.

the government thinks they know better than the stores how to run the business of selling things.

If a store decided to lose a lot to theft, what business is it of the government to say no?

Make the store membership only but allow anyone who wants to shop there the ability to get membership.

All you have to do is give a verifiable address, show sanctioned government ID, have your picture taken as well as a thumb print.

The picture and thumb print will be reproduced and printed on your Store ID.

There are many stores that are membership only that require ID cards.

Then if you feel like shoplifting feel free to do so. Then with the available information we will trespass you for life and the next time you come by we will have you arrested for trespassing.

This is why we can’t have nice things. There’s always a tribe that will mess it up for the rest of us.

Wow. Good thing Scotus, some 70 years ago, banned posting the Ten Commandments in classrooms.

Thank goodness for lawyers.

Bingo!

An armed society is a polite society.

It helps encourage honesty.

One MAN (a real one!) with an aluminum baseball bat “legally” allowed to beat a thief into a coma would end 100% of all shoplifting. After he beat the hell out of one or two, and word got out, he would have nothing else to do but sit there and watch over everyone.
