Government shutdowns have become normal. This one is not.
Washington Post via MSN ^ | Oct 5, 2025 | Karen Tumulty

Government shutdowns are a familiar autumn rite of dysfunctional government. But this one is different from any that have come before. That makes it a harder test of both sides’ resolve and discipline.

President Donald Trump is reveling in a legally shaky plan to employ the shutdown to punish his enemies — or more accurately, their constituents.

The administration has put a halt on tens of billions of federal dollars that are going to blue states, including roughly $18 billion for New York’s subway and Hudson Tunnel projects. Not coincidentally, those are in the hometown of the Democratic leaders of the U.S. House and Senate.

And instead of furloughing federal employees and giving them back pay when the government reopens, as has happened in past shutdowns, Trump is threatening to fire them and gut entire agencies.

As much as the White House is trying to blame this on Democrats, who have refused to give Republicans the eight votes they need in the Senate to reopen the government, a survey by The Washington Post showed that a large plurality of Americans are holding Trump and the Republicans responsible.

Nearly three-quarters support the Democrats in their central demand that subsidies lowering the cost for health coverage purchased under the Affordable Care Act should be extended, rather than expiring as scheduled at the end of the year.......

In the meantime, he has been gleefully trolling the opposition, spreading deepfake videos that include one portraying Vought as the grim reaper. Another depicts House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-New York), who is Black, in a mustache and sombrero. The racist imagery promotes a false Republican claim that Democratic lawmakers are trying to force the government to offer full health care benefits to undocumented immigrants.

When being critical of Democrats, no behavior is racist. All anti Democrat behavior is against a party that is racist to the bone.

Here's hoping the shutdown lasts precisely 61 days. On the 61st day, new rules kick in and MUCH firing can be done, alongside massive restructuring.

That alone suggests the Democrats and Democrat-adjacent RINOs will be working overtime in media messaging to make it seem the world is coming to an end.

I worked contracts in Belgium BOTH times the politicians there could not form a government. Over a year and a half without political governance, and everything went along just fine.

The Republicans control both Houses of Congress and the presidency but lack the party discipline needed to pass a budget by simple majority vote. Therefore, they need enough Rat votes in the Senate for a continuing resolution to continue spending money as previously agreed under the Bidet Regime. This is really about the RINOs who won’t support a proper budget as required by law, and only then is it about the handful of Rats who won’t break their party line for another CR.

It was noted yesterday that:

“Those Obama Care subsidies don’t end until Dec 31st.”

How many Senate votes would it take to eliminate the 60-vote rule? It seems contrary to the very idea of Democracy.

The racist imagery promotes a false Republican claim that Democratic lawmakers are trying to force the government to offer full health care benefits to undocumented immigrants.

Any criticism of a black person is racist. The WaPo has been preaching that for over 50 years now.

“lack the party discipline needed to pass a budget by simple majority vote.”

Kids get their Christmas wishes known before Christmas.

Perhaps all pork should have to be requested by July 1.

Most of the federal budget work is done by the agencies. Congress just gets to say no or not as much.

The democrats hire thousands of worthless federal workers everytime they get in office to boast job numbers into worthless nob essential jobs. Time for a firing correction.

Clinton had the first major shut down...shutdowns are NOT the norm. Continuing Resolutions are though.

The gooooooooooberment has been “shutdown” for almost a week yet when will the firings and the dissolving of agencies begin.

Without the termination of employees or agency termination, then this is just another episode of worthless drama.

"Another depicts House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-New York), who is Black, in a mustache and sombrero."

The media thinks it can use the race card to effect the change it wants and achieve the result it desires.

Sombreros and mustaches point toward some sort of Mexican caricature.

"Mexican" is not a race. But why would the media stop at spreading misinformation when it has a political race to win?

I don’t remember an article like this from the WP when Obama was saying “make it (his shutdown) as painful as possible.”

That is incorrect. The Senate with its rules requires a supermajority (60) to pass something like this. So it is the process.

Sadly for the WaPo, nobody really cares what they have to say. This crep plays to the left’s costal elitist echo chamber. Even Bezos has caught on as evidenced by hiring three new conservative editors.

No, the public is NOT holding Republicans responsible. This ruins the credibility of the entire article. Same thing as court testimony...a lie ruins all of the testimony.
