At midnight on Wednesday, the federal government shut down. Democrats made good on their promise to vote against a continuing resolution if Republicans didn’t extend expiring Obamacare tax credits, and funding expired. Now, both sides are digging in to play the blame game.
Democrats argue that Republicans are to blame for refusing to budge on health care, while Republicans blame Democrats for refusing to provide the votes to keep the government open. Meanwhile, President Donald Trump is making an unprecedented threat to not just furlough federal workers — normal for a shutdown — but lay them off outright and go after programs Democrats support.
To try and make sense of how we got here and what’s happening now, Today Explained co-host Sean Rameswaram spoke with Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren, one of the party’s leading voices on the shut down fight.
Below is an excerpt of their conversation, edited for length and clarity. There’s much more in the full episode, so listen to Today, Explained wherever you get podcasts, including Apple Podcasts, Pandora, and Spotify.
The government is shut down. The Democrats shut it down. I wonder who you think people will blame, you guys or the Republicans?
Let’s back up just a tiny little bit. What happened in July was that the Republicans said, “Yeah, yeah, we know the budget’s out there, but we want to make this change to the budget. We want to roll back healthcare coverage for 15 million Americans, because we want to use that money for tax breaks for a handful of billionaires and billionaire corporations.”
And Democrats said, “You can’t do that, we already had a budget, we already allocated that money.” And Republicans said, “Oh, yes we can.” And they voted it through. Only Republicans voted for it...

I guess:
“Trump” “Healthcare” “Most vulnerable Americans”
The band plays on.......
Fake Squaw speak with forked tongue. Tell heap big lies.
They walked into the DOGE RAT trap.
Besides restoring all funding for illegal immigrants healthcare, the democrats are demanding restoring all funds to NPR and PBS, also restoring all funding for USAID. It’ll really piss me off if Republicans cave to any of this garbage. ANY OF IT!!! All of that stuff benefits democrats only and that’s why they’re fighting tooth and nail for them.
I don’t really care, I know that the money spent on almost all necessary govt programs is borrowed. The taxes go for Military and debt service. There is a destination that must happen, I call it desolation boulevard. Soonest is best. I have 5 children, 5 sons in laws, 19 grandchildren and 3 great grands. They are much more important than (and) to me.
I don't think these people are "Americans" in any way, shape or form.
PBS and NPR are going door to door in SE PA begging for funds. They left a door hanger advertising their paid streaming service, which they’ve never done before.
Stupid ignorant human debris
Squaw Beaver Breath complain too much.
Lieawatha want more wampum.
“Elizabeth Warren on why Democrats had to shut down the government”. I’m glad you did Liz, I got my mail today and as long as I get my monthly SS direct deposit, I’m good. Make sure the US Military gets paid, would you Liz?
Yep.
Her TeePee is paid for.
Both NPR and PBS should add a D in front of those letters standing for Democrat. They do nothing but cheer for democrats and lie about Republicans.
They are petulant children who are losing ground everyday and are desperate for the illusion of “the good fight”. Truth be told each time they make a stand they circle a little bit further down the drain.
They are as liberal as the mainstream media, if not more. With a thin coating of “culture” to convince people they are elite.
Because her Tom-toms wore out?
Do any of these politicians know that a continuing resolution ISN'T a budget?
/rhetorical question
Heh, heh. No doubt.
