Asocial media post made by Stephen King about Charlie Kirk's shooting has sparked a backlash.
Bestselling author King triggered outrage after he called the death of Kirk, 31, who was fatally shot at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah, on Wednesday during a question-and-answer session on campus "another example of American gun violence."
The Context
The 31-year-old was a conservative influencer and President Donald Trump ally. He was also the founder and executive director of Turning Point USA and frequently visited university campuses to deliver talks.
The motivation of the shooter is not known but Kirk's death has reignited concerns of deepening political polarization and violence in the U.S. It has also caused some to make points about gun control and whether stricter policies regarding firearms would have prevented Kirk's death.
Signs are seen at a growing vigil for Charlie Kirk outside Timpanogos Regional Hospital after Kirk was shot and killed Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2025, in Orem, Utah What To Know
On X, King wrote: "The motivation of the man who shot Charlie Kirk isn't clear (although he's probably mentally unstable--duh). What is clear is it was another example of American gun violence."
In response, X users rushed to criticize King.
Max Abrahms, an international security professor wrote: "So predictable, every single time, skip the ideology, blame the weapon and mental illness when the right is targeted."
"For someone that writes so many good stories you don't seem to know how to read the room," said one X user.

Attention whore.
Ugly on the inside out.
King is a smug “F”INF A-HOLE...... I KNOW!
Just not for the reasons he thinks he is right.
Sadly, I wasted so much time reading his books. That time could have been better used.
400,000,000 guns and over a trillion rounds of ammo in private hands. Trust us Democrat Marxists propaganda bots, if gun ownership was the problem you would know it.
For people who complain so much about gun violence, they sure do practice it a lot.
What - he wants to get rid of bolt action hunting rifles now. It was never about high capacity firearms - but giving them all to the government (and of course his personal security)
Thanks, Stephen. Hopefully they’ll stick to axes or flesh eating demon clowns next time. Go away pedo.
Hey, Stephen, were you hit and nearly killed by a distracted driver or van that somehow came to life and aimed for you? This ain’t Christine or Trucks.
Its also another example of Trans Violence, Stephen. But you aren’t going to say that, are you?
Dox him. Let him deal with snipers too.
“For someone that writes so many good stories “
No. His stories are horror. By definition. Nope
He has a public presence by virtue of selling a lot of books. He is using it here in an abusive way. He is not qualified nor elected to take a public stance on those situation.
For people who complain so much about gun violence, they sure do practice it a lot.
now THAT is the truth.
His whole career is based on plagiarizing a man who is considered so racist he dead to be canceled 70 years after his death.
Stephen King can write good fiction, but he has no grasp of reality.
Look at the kind of stories he writes.
It doesn’t take a dime-store psychologist to see that he fantasizes about death and fear. Some people suggest he writes well, but I have never been a fan.
I would posit that King privately admires the shooter.
