The Polish pianist Josef Hoffmann wrote an arrangement in C Major that is bombastic. You can hear the bombs bursting in midair. I played this version at a recital at age 12. I had hands large enough to pull if off.

Rachmaninoff didn't like the Hoffmann version. He decided to write his own arrangement in the traditional key of B-flat Major, and he chose to eschew the bombast and concentrate on something more heartfelt. He became an American citizen just weeks before his death in 1943 at age 69 from cancer as his final way of giving the finger to Stalin.

In 1938 at a dinner with Igor Stravinsky at Arthur Rubinstein's house in Beverly Hills, Rachmaninoff summed up his relationship with the Soviet government and its unwillingness to pay him his royalties.
