“If they are interacting with a customer and the customer says, this is my preferred name and these are my preferred pronouns, this is the way I want to be addressed, there is a legal obligation to do that. They're compelled to use those pronouns and those surnames under Colorado's law.
That's compelled speech, and the real kicker is there criminal penalties for it. You can have prison time, jail time for up to 4 months if you don't abide that.”
- Kristen Waggoner, President, CEO & General Counsel at Alliance Defending Freedom

I identify as a male dog, Can I sue if they don’t bark back? Can I lift my leg and pee on them?

I remember a 60 Minutes show back around 1990 about that same thing.

So they think they can pass laws inhibiting free speech? Has this been appealed to the courts yet?

They can call themselves anything they want...but they can’[t tell me what to call them...be it he, she or it.

“Should be very easy case.”
Wish it was. But the state knows when you sue the state it involves time, money and even if successful, the state will pay the bill out of tax money. And when they have to pay that bill what program that might be good for everyone is going to be defunded? It certainly won’t be one of their pork setups.
And it was wasting tax dollars to get the bill through while the people that did it are going to get their wages and determine they are working a lot and need to vote themselves a raise.
Like said, wish it was that easy.

2 thoughts.
I didn’t think any state was that stupid. But here we are.
Someone is going to get sued into oblivion.

They drew too soon, this will make its way to a SCOTUS that will have none of it, even Roberts.

She is sounding the alarm. She had nothing to do with passing the bill and her organization opposes it.

The prisons in liberal states are obviously being reorganized for a political foe, instead of criminals.
Get it?

A better example is to require everyone to capitalize “He” when referring to God or to use “A.D.” and “B.C.” This issue of preferred pronouns needs to get resolved by the Supreme Court.

BTW this article -- not your fault -- is poorly constructed in syntax. Waggoner is a tough-as-nails conservative advocate for religious free speech as head of Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF).
She was instrumental in the Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission victory, which has had so much downstream success there is some law student out there who could get his LLM from just that analysis.

This is getting to be Gilbert & Sullivan territory in absurdity.
