California lawmakers swiftly pass, governor signs, Democrats' redistricting plan

Summary

LOS ANGELES, Aug 21 (Reuters) - The California legislature approved on Thursday a redistricting plan aimed at giving Democrats five more seats in the U.S. Congress, countering a partisan advantage President Donald Trump sought from a Republican move to redraw political maps in Texas.

California Democrats pushed their three bills through the state Senate and Assembly in a remarkable flurry of fast-track action, ahead of a Friday deadline to get the changes on the ballot in time for a special election on November 4.

The swift passage was a decisive victory for Governor Gavin Newsom, widely seen as a possible 2028 White House contender whose national political stature has climbed as he led Democrats' charge against what they decried as an attempted power grab in the Republican-led state of Texas.

"Time to fight fire with fire," the governor wrote on X shortly after the legislature voted.

Newsom, who enjoys a Democratic super-majority in both houses of the California legislature, later signed the measure to put his redistricting plan up for popular vote.

If successful, it would neutralize the Trump-backed Texas bill designed to flip five Democratic seats to Republican control in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Republicans, including Trump, have openly acknowledged that the Texas effort is about boosting their political clout by helping to preserve the party's slim U.S. House majority in the November 2026 midterm races.

That election already is shaping up as closely fought.

As crazy as California is, is it even possible to gerrymander the remaining Republican seats out of Congress? They only have 9 out of 52, or about 17%. while Trump got about 38% of the vote there in 2024. I can’t imagine they can tweak it anymore than it already is.

Trump got 38% of the vote in California, yet Republicans have only 9 of 52 U.S. House Representatives (17%).

California is already horribly gerrymandered to cut in half the Republican representation.

The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government
U Const., Art. IV, Sec. 4.

This Newsome/Democrat redistricting of CA is Constitutionally illegal and, thus, invalid, because it violates the representation of a republic in CA mandated by the Constitution.

This is one of the few powers the feds have over the states. It is a federal issue and Trump and Co. should take it to the U.S. Supreme Court on that very basis.

America's Free Constitutional Republic of representation and limited gov't stands opposed to Obama's/the Dem's radical democracy of unlimited gov't and tyranny of populous locations like LA and SF in CA.

It's illegal. Their laws require the redistricting to be done by the commission. It was done by the legislature. The people of California should be screaming...fraud...

But they're sheep....and will say baaa baaa

California is the apotheosis of democrat/woke government and printed-fiat money and massive government debt.

Its the result of a 70 year progressive-leftist experiment in government.

They should do it anyway and then Gavin Newsom will have to run on his record when he runs for President in 2028.

And word it so folks will easily be fooled into approving it. But, if only 10 people show up and vote for it, its a win.

Okay, so now Democrat Newscum will strip republicans of the last seat in congress from CA. That state is so gerrymandered already it is like stabbing a dead corpse.

California is the way it is because of Ball-less, Country Club Republicans, who sat back on their asses while democrats cheated mightily; and continue to do so today (through illegal alien voting, absentee ballots and voting machine fraud).

California’s no different than Venezuela when it comes high-level corruption!

It's illegal. Their laws require the redistricting to be done by the commission.

One would expect this will be pointed out to the courts, who will shut this down when it is challenged (as of course it will be). It may take a level or two of appeals depending on the ideology of the first judge(s) to review it, but that's pretty much inevitable. It is astonishing how openly the Democrats disregard their own laws the instant those laws become inconvenient to them.

Texas’ special session is not yet over. There is still time to amend the Texas plan to take away even more democrat districts.

Call it “reciprocal gerrymandering.” Texas dems should have no more districts than California Republicans.

Trump got 52 percent in Texas. Maybe according to you it should be 20 red to 18 blue. But itโ€™s going to be 30 red to 8 blue.

Blue states with ZERO Republican House seats:
Massachusetts
Rhode Island
Vermont
New Hampshire
Hawaii
New Mexico
Connecticut
Delaware

Blue states with ONE Republican House seat:
Maryland
Oregon
Maine

Blue states with 2-5 Republican House seats:
Colorado
Minnesota
Illinois
Virginia
New Jersey

After that, you only have California & New York

But, hey, let's focus on Texas because that's what the left wants us to.
