Curtis Sliwa’s quality-of-life crackdown makes sense — but he still won’t be the next mayor of New York City
New York Post ^ | August 19, 2025 | Kristen Fleming

Will Curtis Sliwa have any regrets if he wakes up on November 5 and Zohran Mamdani is the new mayor of New York — knowing he could have stepped aside and cleared the crowded campaign field that many fear will split the vote?

“Nope,” the Republican candidate told me.

So he’s not willing to sacrifice his candidacy to save the city he loves from socialism?

“That’s based on the idea that everyone is going to go over and vote Cuomo. Ain’t happening. They hate Cuomo. I’m in the streets every day. All I hear is ‘slapping fannies and killing grannies.’ He’s never apologized,” Sliwa said of Andrew Cuomo’s COVID and #MeToo scandals.

Meanwhile, a new AARP poll shows Mamdani’s support at 42% among registered voters; Cuomo is at 23%, fellow independent Adams is at 9%, and Sliwa claims 16%. It would stand to reason the three need to become one to beat the Democratic socialist.

But Sliwa says it isn’t happening.

“Nobody is getting out. Cuomo isn’t, [Eric] Adams isn’t. Every day there’s a discussion about dropping out, that’s a good day for Mamdani,” Sliwa said.

I met with the 71-year-old at his Midtown campaign headquarters. While he’s been an NYC tabloid figure since the late 1970s, when he launched the civilian crime-fighting group the Guardian Angels, he’s lately been almost unrecognizable — taking off his signature red beret in meetings to look more like a serious politician.

Sliwa is right. If he dropped out, his supporters won't necessarily cross over to Cuomo.

Sliwa should stay in the race. He has a shot, however slim. And if New Yorkers reject him, that's on them.

He could be a shadow mayor. He probably could win many, many precincts...he should become de facto mayor of those districts. As an example ..he could lead those districts to drive out criminals, drugs, and homeless encampments. Could employ street law enforcers(volunteers).Could have guards in all subway stations in those precincts, could expose businesses cheating the federal government. Could even create voluntary, clandestine(non violent) “minutemen” to resist government tyranny any legal way possible.

If he would just get rid of that stupid beret he might have a chance!

The amazing thing is that Adams is polling so poorly

Looks like NYC is going to have to get what it votes for

The real problem is that under no circumstances on this good earth will Cuomo evereverever withdraw.

His ego won’t allow it. He’ll let the city burn first, then escape to FL.

As bad as Adams is, he’s there and NYC can survive him for a while longer.

Sliwas’s time in the sunshine passed long ago.

I couldn’t imagine voting for anyone else in that race but Sliwa.

The Important fact is:

THAT 58% ...A WHOPPING FIFTY EITHT PERCENT OF NEW YORKERS...DO NOT WANT MORON MAMDANI.

How does one rule with that?

The article says he's ditched the beret.

he’s lately been almost unrecognizable — taking off his signature red beret in meetings to look more like a serious politician.

Yet even in this article, the Post has several pictures of him in his beret.

Even if he ditches the beret, the media still runs old photos of him wearing it.

The amazing thing is that Adams is polling so poorly

That's because NYC is currently in a really bad state.

An incumbent has to have performed really poorly to be trailing so badly.

Sliwa is about as old as Trump was in 2016.

Sliwa and Cuomo should both drop out.

That makes no sense. Adams is trailing both of them.

Logic dictates that the poorest performer drop out first.

Yes, but some of that 58% might prefer Mamdani to one of the other three candidates.

I nervously think Sliwa should stay in the race, and sent him money (NY is my home state). He’s the only one who would be a good mayor. Trump beat the odds, why not Curtis?

NYS went all mail-in.

NYC now has RCV for mayorals.

If Gotham would vote for this, why does Deep State have to steal its elections?

Except for Sliwa, nobody in this race is any good. Adams is corrupt, Cuomo is just terrible.
How did it come to this choice?
