TACO Trump Backs Out of China Tariffs Hours Before Deadline
The Daily Beast ^ | 08/12/2025 | Cameron Adams

Tariffs as high as 145 percent were due to be implemented on goods from China at midnight Tuesday. The last-minute extension came hours after Trump provided a vague response to reporters on extending the deadline on Monday.

“We’ve been dealing very nicely with China… they have tremendous tariffs that they’re paying to the United States of America,” Trump said during a press conference at the White House. “We’ll see what happens. They’ve been dealing quite nicely. The relationship is very good with President Xi and myself.”

Trump signed a new Executive Order later on Monday. China will now have its tariff suspension deadline pushed to Nov. 10, the second time Trump has given them special treatment this year.

He didn’t back down, I don’t think. China has meant some condition of Trump’s and he’s delayed the implementation as long as there is talk.

TACO The Acronym Control Officer

Is that what you meant? Always define your acronyms. The TACO said so.

The 30% baseline tariff is still in effect, as well as additional tariffs on steel, aluminum, etc., as negotiations continue.

Before too long (is 3 years too long?), Trump will stop the tariffs dance with China and then, no tariffs will have been imposed.

China knows the delay tactics, and will wait out Trump’s tenure.

Stretching out negotiations….who does it benefit?
Not Chinese factories.

Plus Trump just imposed a tariff-by-other means, getting NVIDIA to pay 15% of its profits from Chinese sales for an “export license”
Thats $3 Billion ( from its $20 Billion in sales) and paid by the company and/or its Chinese customers

Winning

Plus China is saying they’ll buy more U.S. farm products, especially soybeans.

And of course they don’t want Trump to be tough, they just want to criticize him for whatever position he takes. They certainly don’t want him to succeed, even if his failure damages the US.

Sure, that's happening. Trump is so stupid, the wily ChiComs got him.

Trump’s history on tariffs seems to indicate that often they are just a way to pressure trade partners into more equitable deals overall: Deals that hopefully open up other countries to our products, but not deals that end up with high tariffs that slam dunk protect US jobs in the manufacturing sector — many of which may go to AI and robots anyway.

That said, so far, when a sector is absolutely crucial to national defense, Trump does get a bit tougher with the tariffs. Steel, for example.
