The Reason Dole Temporarily Halted Production Across the U.S
Tasting Table ^ | February 23, 2023 | Meggan Robinson

Why have grocery stores been experiencing a shortage of some of their popular Dole items? The reason is part of a growing trend that poses a significant threat to food companies. CNN obtained a memo dated February 10 that Dole sent to its customers, explaining why the company had been forced briefly halt its operations, which include farms and four processing plants and employ 3,000 people across North America.

...

On February 22, 2023, Dole plc publicly addressed the cyber attack in a brief press release, saying the company had "moved quickly to contain the threat and engaged leading third-party cybersecurity experts" to resolve issues and make their systems more secure.

...

Ransomware attacks are typically followed by random demands in exchange for decryption, and food companies are just as vulnerable as other industries. Yum! Brands, owner of KFC, Pizza Hut, and Taco Bell, temporarily closed nearly 300 restaurants in the U.K. in January 2023, and in 2021. The world's largest meatpacking company, JBS Foods was forced to suspend operations at several locations worldwide due to a ransomware attack, affecting operations in Australia, Canada, and the U.S.

My 95 year old mother in law will ONLY eat Dole raisins. She hates the other brands. Our stores only just now totally ran out of them. I can't find them anywhere. Our Wal-Marts and Targets also, don't have them (although some carry them in the states). We are in Hawaii.

I just found this online as an explanation and wondered if it impacted others. Yes, the article is two years old. They don't seem to have solved the problem yet.

Can anyone suggest a comparable brand. Dole raisins are dried, but soft and moist NOT like Sun Maid! Thanks in advance.

Make your own raisins.

It’s easy and they’re far better than the processed ones.

I would if I had the time. I’m old, tired, caring for a 95 year old, A son home from the Navy, A traveling husband, A total home renovation, and more. In short, no time. I used to do this stuff. Also, she is so picky. I made her ice cream and other stuff and it was a non starter. She wants what she wants.

I really think major concerns should make it a habit to run dual systems.

No, but I had a friend who kept her raisins in a shallow open dish, soaked in gin. The alcohol would evaporate, but the raisins would become and remain soft. I don’t drink, so I have no idea what gin tastes like, but apparently it did not affect the taste of the raisins.

Raisin.

A black friend in college (1964) said his mother made a joke about the Sidney Poitier movie A Raisin in the Sun.
Suppressing a smile she said: “I just knew when I heard A Raisin in the Sun was coming out it had to do with us black people. All our raisin’ we do.”

I would guess she grew up hearing, eat what’s on the table or go without. You sound very kind to be bullied.

Oh, she doesn’t bully me. I love her so much! But she is also set in her ways ... and her memory is slipping. Although I came on Monday, she couldn’t remember and called frantic that something had happened to me. I was on the phone trying to unravel a Home Depot pick up disaster and could see her third call. I hurried up as fast as I could but I’d been disconnected twice, was on my fourth agent and finally got a manager. I called Mom back and calmed her down only to find out home depot had scheduled a delivery for pick up for me. What is that? They just keep messing up! I won’t go into the rest, but I am drained today.

If you can get your hands on a box or 2 of Dole, keep the box when empty and put another brand in it so mom will think it’s Dole.

Clever, but trust me she can tell the difference.... Very discerning palate! Even I can tell the difference. That’s why I’m asking if anybody knows of a comparable brand. I may just buy a bunch and let her figure it out. She will call it a waste, but I want to make her happy. It goes on her oatmeal EVERY morning ... That or bananas ..... I buy lots of bananas but they ripen too fast!

Sadly, A bad day for Mom sends her spiraling into depression where she says she wants to die. I want her to make 100. She is in pretty good health ... Walks, cognitively there, living on her own (with us checking on her). Help me find her replacement raisins. Please?

Gently steam Sun Maid (or other brand) for just a little while. Just place them loose in a strainer above boiling water. You probably should keep stir them occasionally. Taste them until they are as soft and moist as she might like them.

You can’t always get what you want.

But

If you try sometimes

You might find

You get what you need.

Seriously, I think the steaming the other brands raisins to make them soft, idea, is the best shot.

Amazon offers dozens of different brands of raisins, both dark and golden. Why don’t you try a little taste testing? Might be fun.

Seriously, Mom won’t steam her raisins. I am not gonna get up and go over there to steam them on the rare occasions she needs them. I don’t have the time. And she wouldn’t let me. Raisins sit on her shelf for months as a back up. She feels as if she is a burden. She’s not, but she thinks she is.

She needs a shelf stable, available when she runs out of bananas soft raisin source. She has trouble using her stove and only makes oatmeal on it ... Sometimes burning it. I don’t think she knows how to or has a steamer. She hardly cooks. Her husband used to do that. She eats very few things. We bring her over most weekends and feed her and send her home with lots of food. But not breakfast. Her breakfast is set in stone.

She’s given up using the oven. Only the microwave now. But she hates microwave oatmeal (I bought her some with raisins and she won’t touch it). I am dealing with a 95 year old who is VERY set in her ways. Y’all keep giving me workarounds which would work if I lived with her but I don’t.

I.just.need.a.new. brand. Of. Plump. Raisin.

Bad news, I’m afraid. Google AI says…

Dole has discontinued their raisins. Several sources confirm that the DOLE® Raisins product has been discontinued. A Reddit thread confirms this and notes the disappointment of customers who enjoyed the product. You can still find other brands of raisins, such as Newman’s Own Organic or Great Value Organic, available at Walmart.

[I always thought Sunmaid had a lock on the raisin market]
