1:07 What is an earthquake?An earthquake is caused when two blocks of Earth's crust slip past each other on a fault plane, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Tsunami alerts were issued for Alaska and Hawaii on Tuesday after a major, 8.7 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Russia, according to officials.
The earthquake occurred about 85 miles off the east coast of Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula with a depth of nearly 12 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Link? That sounds very “interesting”, as Mr. Spock might say.
USGS has been posting ~46 miles depth since fairly early on. I wonder where ABC got the 12 mile figure?
I won’t post the actual picture πΌοΈ but here it is - pretty sad event π

Wouldn’t that be a carcophony?
Sorry, I just couldn’t resist.
Lol!
Dozens (like around 7 or 8 dozen so far) of aftershocks around magnitude 5+ all over that peninsula since the big one. Is anything still standing?

Yikes
“If I looked correctly that was a Sunday morning “
My HS Physics Teacher told me a few months in advance the day Mt St. Helens would blow — May 18th (we understood the 1980 part).
I asked him why and he informed me that was when six planets were aligned and would produce the largest ‘pull’ on the earth.
OK — don’t believe me? I grew up on the northern Oregon coast (lived through three tidal-wave warnings) and when the sun and moon were in/close to syzygy the low tides were ‘so very far out’ that it was scary...
I missed this one by a few years but it killed multiple folks in Cannon Beach, OR:
!
I was living south of San Diego, CA when Mt. St. Helens blew, working for a ceramics company. The guys that made our glazes drove up there when they got the ‘all clear’ and collected as much ash as they possibly could and incorporated it into one of their glaze powders.
I used to have a coffee urn that was the most beautiful shade of blue you’d ever want to see, made from that glaze.
Wish I still had it!
There’s an old Christian movie πΏπΏπΏ regarding the End Times where one actor talks about the alignment of planets in regards to earthquakes(?)
The movie was “Early Warning” with a release date of 1981.
I’d have to watch it again. They were trying to portray the rise of the Antichrist and electronic banking as a method of controlling a person’s ability to BUY and SELL.
It was an early effort but a movie that I had never seen before Red Citizen mentioned it (thanks).
The actor was Jack “Alvy” Moore, better known as County Agent Hank Kimball from “Green Acres”. Alvy was a Born-Again Christian. I had no idea. Pretty cool π.
And there’s more. Actor Tom Lester played farmhand Eb Dawson on “Green Acres”. Actor Tom Lester was also a Born-Again Christian and was by Jack “Alvy” Moore’s side when he passed away and went to be with the Lord.
I just looked again. Actor Tom Lester also worked as an evangelist βοΈβοΈ. Wow!
Ping list: please ping others who may be interested as I only have a short list available on this device. I’ll try to remember to fix that for future reference.
How to derive a wave’s speed and arrival time:
Velocity in mph = 1.65 x wave Period in seconds
or
V=1.65 x P
Given: A tsunami passes a buoy at midnight with a period of 152 seconds from peak to peak.
The buoy is 1,000 miles from your shore.
When will the tsunami hit your shore in the same time zone?
V=1.65 x P
V=1.65 x 152
V=250.8
Wave velocity = 250.8 miles per hour
The tsunami has 1,000 miles to travel to hit your shore.
1,000 mi / 250.8 mph = 3.99 hours
It will arrive at your shore in about 4 hours at 4am.
Caveat: Waves travel in sets. Individual waves travel twice as fast (3.3 x period) as wave sets, but transfer their energy rearward as they travel.

The 1964 Good Friday quake in Anchorage Alaska was a 9.2-9.3 that really pegged the meter. I lived up there for awhile in 1969 and there was lots of unrepaired damage in the entire region five after the earthquake. it was pretty amazing.

good response! LOL
I got to suspect it was some kind of computer problem.
Aint no way shock waves like that wouldve moved across the continent without causing fault lines to slip.
I stayed at that Navy Lodge many years ago. Also stayed at the Yokosuka Hotel right outside the main gate..
I was there as a civilian contractor..
Oh
Anchorage got banged up a bit with a 7.1 earthquake in the late fall of 2018, but no catastrophic damage from what I remember.

There is the information. Enjoy.
To put it into context, I used to be able to drive from Southlake Mall to the IN/IL border west of Dyer, IN (which is where I lived) in about 10 minutes back in the day. Now I think it takes almost, what, 45-60 minutes?
Crazy.
BTW, is Southlake Mall still open or has it been abandoned like so many others?
