Tesla shares plunged as much as 10% in early trading Thursday after the company posted its steepest sales drop in more than a decade – and CEO Elon Musk warned the slump may not end anytime soon.
The embattled electric carmaker reported that revenue from car sales fell 16% to $16.7 billion in the second quarter versus a year ago – its second straight quarter of declining sales. Tesla also missed Wall Street’s quarterly estimates for both earnings per share and overall revenue.
“We probably could have a few rough quarters,” Musk admitted during the company’s earnings call on Wednesday.***
Tesla executives blamed the impact of tariffs as well as the upcoming end of federal electric vehicle tax credits – which reportedly sparked Musk’s public falling-out with President Trump – as a key factor in the sales downturn.
Musk said the negative trend could extend into “Q4, Q1, maybe Q2,” or the end of this year and the first half of 2026 – before improving in the second half of next year as Tesla rolls out an expanded “Robotaxi” autonomous driving service.
Once you get to autonomy at scale in the second half of next year, I’d be surprised if Tesla Inc.’s economics are not very compelling,” Musk said.
“We’ll probably have autonomous ride-hailing in about half the population of the US by the end of the year,” Musk added at another point in the call. “That’s at least our goal, subject to regulatory approvals.”

The loss of tax credits is just part of the problem for Tesla. Analysts have cited rising competition in Europe and China from Chinese automaker BYD and other rivals, as well as Tesla’s aging car lineup and brand damage caused by Musk’s work with the Department of Government Efficiency.***

Here is Austin, I’ve had rides in Waymo (autonomous vehicle) approximately 10 times. My limited experience is that the Waymo rides were markedly safer than the average Uber driver.
I have considered buying a Tesla 3. Upon researching however I learned that the stated mileage is markedly lower than the real world experience. A) Tesla recommends that the vehicle only be charged to 80% and that you shouldn’t go below 20% capacity. B) cold weather (a somewhat rare phenomenon is Austin) reduces the range of the EV C) So does running the AC (a common practice in Texas)
Liberals apparently equate Musk rooting out government waste and fraud with fascism. Providing once again that liberals do not know of what they speak.
Until the solid state batteries with ranges of 750+ miles hit the market, EVs will not be readily accepted as a viable alternative. As an aside, Musk was very late in the solid state battery race.
EV’s are losing steam.
Hydrogen is becoming the real alternative and it offers real world performance that is comparable to ICE.
The EV fad seems to be waning.
Musk has managed to piss off Leftists by working for Trump, and then piss off Conservatives by attacking Trump.
Not exactly the best business strategy, but Musk is far from the only business leader doing that.
His cars are fancy electronic garbage and his rockets keep blowing up.
Full Self Driving? Forget it. That is the Schrodinger’s Cat version of a Square Peg in a Round Hole.
“His cars are fancy electronic garbage and his rockets keep blowing up.”
ROTFLMAO!
The Tesla mdodel Y was the car with the second largst worldwide sales volume in 2024
The Toyota RAV4 was the world’s best seller
His immediate problem? The end of the $7500 EV credit by year-end. His low end model in the US goes up 20%. Cybertruck jumps 10%. The end of Federal CAFE credits means another $1b+ hit to Tesla’s bottom line, a slug of pure profit Tesla got just from being an EV maker in volume.

Yep, a $7500 tax credit is quite the incentive if you want a Tesla or EV.
If I had the money I would consider a Tesla as a backup car. That said most of the models look ugly to me. Only the S model looks to be normal so I’d go with that one but it’s also one of the most expensive ones new.
but some governments are still ordering their citizens to buy EVs ,LOL
There is no standard production automobile in the world with a 750 mile range.
“his rockets keep blowing up”
Uh, Falcon 9 has flown 500 times in the last ten years, a record unparalleled in aerospace history. They do so by returning to the launch site, also unparalleled in aerospace history.
The development cycle for Starship is exponentially more difficult then F9 as it is significantly more capable and sophisticated. But it will fly, and do so reliably, with a development time far shorter then the non-existent competition (ULA, Blue Origin, Roscosmos, and Arianespace).
The statement is ludicrous.
