Harvard sued by Jewish graduate over antisemitic assault

A Jewish graduate of Harvard Business School has filed a federal lawsuit against Harvard University and its police department, accusing them of enabling a hostile antisemitic environment and failing to discipline students who allegedly assaulted him during a campus protest, National Review reported on Friday.

The plaintiff, Yoav Segev, claims he was physically attacked on October 18, 2023, while passing a pro-Palestinian Arab demonstration on Harvard’s campus. According to the lawsuit, Segev was wearing a bracelet symbolizing his Israeli identity when self-designated “safety marshals” at the protest confronted him. He was shoved, surrounded, and had keffiyehs and protest signs pushed into his face. At one point, a masked student leapt at him and another placed an arm around his neck.

Segev alleges that although he tried to de-escalate the situation, the crowd continued to physically and verbally accost him. The suit contends that the incident was caught on video, yet Harvard refused to take disciplinary action against the students involved and later obstructed local criminal investigations.

Segev maintains that university police halted the investigation and that administrators implemented a new policy barring disciplinary measures during ongoing criminal proceedings. Once the criminal case concluded, the university allegedly did not resume internal proceedings.

The complaint asserts that the students who assaulted Segev were ultimately rewarded by the university. One reportedly received a $65,000 Harvard Law Review fellowship and was featured in prominent university publications. Another was selected as a marshal for graduation. All were permitted to graduate in good standing.

Segev, who initially pursued an administrative complaint and later filed a lawsuit under a pseudonym, claims Harvard outed him publicly by releasing emails and documents containing identifying information. He further alleges that Harvard refused to let him file a complaint anonymously and declined to share the results of its internal investigation...

Yoav Segev, the plaintiff, fully endorsed Harvard and all its Leftist, anti-American efforts. He agreed with it and embraced it because he believed it would be used against others. He had no complaints in any classes he sat in while going through that agenda.

In what world is anti-capitalism a disqualifier for an MBA? Where does that even come from?

Communists took over universities and their MBA programs almost a century ago. Some universities added their MBA programs after they were taken over by Communists.

What? The reputation of graduating from the crem de la crem MBA program?

He did not go to Harvard to become a communist. He either was one before matriculating, or after graduating, in the latter case of which he would have not filed suit. Or, a third possiblity: He went to Harvard’s MBA because he wanted a high-prestige MBA, and he got one. Whether it’s overrated is another question. I’d say that now it certainly is. But it was not a few decades ago.

He got exactly what he paid for but now turns around and claims it's not what he bought. He's looking for a refund via a lawsuit. (Ironically, Harvard Law could have taught him that but he went for an MBA).

He can't argue ignorance. That he was awarded the degree is evidence shows he's smart enough to know what was going on for four years while he was there.

He wanted that "high-prestige" MBA from the Leftist institution and got it - all of it. He has no standing.

Standing means being aggrieved and having a cause of action for redress of that grievance. He wasn’t aggrieved by being in a leftist institution, which he was either willing to put up with or entirely happy about it.

He was aggrieved by being assaulted. Keep your issues separate and distinguishable. If he had gone to a conservative institution and got assaulted, it would have been the same tort.

He's looking for a tuition refund and is using lawfare to try to force it, but would have to claim mental deficiency in order for his argument to stand. "Your honor, I didn't know the University I attended that preached Leftist revolution for nearly a century would have students resort to those tactics when it involved me. Really, your honor, I didn't know."

He believed he was one of them because he hated the same people they did, only to find out they don't discriminate. He can celebrate diversity and equality on his own dime.

I’m sorry. But you have a huge burden of proof here. “Those tactics” are not taught in any course at Harvard, and until October 7 brought out the Sinwar Youth, they were not practiced at Harvard. There was a culture there that eventually led to that kind of thing, but you have no evidence that he was ok with that culture. He wanted an MBA at Harvard and he got an MBA at Harvard, and even if he was aware of that culture, assault is assault. It crosses a line.
