BEAVERTON, Ore. (KATU) — An Iranian national was taken into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Tuesday morning in a Beaverton preschool parking lot after dropping his child off.
In an email, Angel Ignacio, a spokesperson for Guidepost Montessori school, confirmed the arrest.
"We are deeply disturbed by what took place in our South Beaverton school parking lot yesterday. While we are still working to understand the full details of the situation, we can confirm that a law enforcement action occurred during school hours and involved the apprehension of a parent by federal agents," the statement reads in part.
To protect the child's safety and privacy, KATU is not naming the parent.
A regional spokesperson for ICE also confirmed the arrest and claimed it took place in the school's parking lot after agents had engaged the parent at a traffic stop, but allowed him to drop his child off before taking him into custody.
"Officers allowed him to proceed to the daycare parking lot where he stopped cooperating, resisted arrest and refused to exit his vehicle, resulting in ICE officers making entry by breaking one of the windows to complete the arrest. His child was unharmed," ICE Regional Spokesperson David Yost wrote in an email.
Yost initially provided an incorrect statement claiming the child was in the car at the time of the arrest. He later corrected that statement. This article now includes the correction.
"Removable aliens are asked if they want to be removed with their children or place their children with a designated guardian. ICE officers are trained to de-escalate these situations and prioritize safety," the statement goes on to say.
The email concluded, "ICE takes the safety of children seriously and will continue to work with ORR to ensure that children are safe and protected."
Yost noted that the man, an Iranian citizen, entered the U.S. legally, but allegedly overstayed the terms of his visa.
In January the Trump administration rescinded a Biden-era policy that prohibited ICE from making arrests in "sensitive" locations such as schools, churches and hospitals.
"While ICE is not subject to previous restrictions on immigration operations at sensitive locations, to include schools, churches and courthouses, ICE does not indiscriminately take enforcement actions at these locations," Yost's email reads.
As first reported by the Oregonian, this appears to be the first ICE arrest on school property in Oregon.
Senator Ron Wyden, D-Ore., said the family has reached out to his office.
"The family has contacted our office and we are pressing the Trump administration at every level to get answers," a spokesperson for Wyden said in an email.
Ignacio's statement goes on to say that the school is working to provide support to the family and child.
"Our first priority is the safety and emotional well-being of the children in our care. We are actively supporting the affected child and family, and we are providing our staff and families with resources to help them process this event with care and sensitivity," her email reads. "We are also reviewing the circumstances surrounding this incident and taking steps to ensure that our campuses remain a safe and secure environment for all members of our school community."
have they declared as a sanctuary daycare
ICE made the mistake of being nice
he overstayed his visa
they knew his status when they pulled him over
they were looking for him
illegal iranians are a top priority since midnite hammer
Part of the Iranians assassination/terrorist cell?
I did not write I thought ICE was in the wrong.
We don’t want to be a kneejerk vigilante...but don’t want to be a Pollyanna either. Stay alert my friends, don’t let prejudices or bias effect good informed judgement.
IMHO
Substantially increasingly likely..
There were a miniscule number of Hispanics native to the West coast before there was a UnitedStates
GASP! A Parent? Was Arrested? For BREAKING THE LAW? Say it aint so! The nerve of them!
What next? Arresting illegal alien brothers or sisters of parents who BREAK THE LAW?
“The West coast is full of people with Hispanic names who were born there and whose ancestors were native there before there even was a u.S.”
My dear friend is Hispanic with an obviously Hispanic lady name, living in SoCal. Her grandfather fought in WWII.
She was an applicant for a position where I worked. When I was interviewing her, the HR Director said, “Good. It would be helpful to have someone who speaks Spanish here.”
Chris bristled and said, “I am an American. I don’t speak Spanish!” I hired her. That was in 2005, and we still communicate often.
What we don’t know is how many of the millions let loose in our nation are actually enemy agents, sent in to create terrorist cells to be activated at some future date.
If they are not in our nation legally I want them gone.
“”The family has contacted our office and we are pressing the Trump administration at every level to get answers,” a spokesperson for Wyden said in an email.”
Pretty MILD statement by Wyden’s people. Obviously, at a minimum, they don’t know much about this Iranian, but my guess is that they do know a lot...and they don’t want to end up like other Democrats, on the 20 side of a 20/80 issue, in this case, protecting a terrorist.
No mention of illegal anywhere in the article when it’s so obvious. When you overstay your visa you’re illegal.
Correct.
It’s not that tough “angel”- if he’s here illegally, he’s going home. Period.
Wyden is Oregon’s version of Adam shifty
So the daycare indignantly blames ICE instead of the law-breaking parent. They'd rather help someone break the law in exchange for the monnaaah.
Fun story.
