Wall Street economist who ripped Trump admits prez may have ‘outsmarted all of us’ on tariffs

A prominent Wall Street economist who had slammed President Trump’s tariffs earlier this year now says that the president may have “outsmarted all of us” with his controversial trade policies.

Torsten Sløk, chief economist at investment giant Apollo Global Management, said that while the uncertainty surrounding trade policy has already started to weigh on the economy, Trump could lower tariffs on most of the US trading partners while using the levies to boost federal revenue.

Sløk suggested in a recently posted analysis that the administration’s approach may be more strategic than previously thought.

The optimistic outlook stands in stark contrast to his earlier position.

In April, Sløk warned that Trump’s tariffs could trigger a recession by summer, particularly harming American small businesses and potentially halting the flow of goods from China to the US, leading to layoffs and a broader economic slowdown.

This time around, Sløk suggested that one potential move could be to keep 30% tariffs on Chinese imports while imposing 10% tariffs on all other countries — offering them a 12-month window to reduce non-tariff barriers and liberalize trade access.

“Extending the deadline one year would give countries and US domestic businesses time to adjust to the new world with permanently higher tariffs,” Sløk wrote.

“It would also result in an immediate decline in uncertainty, which would be positive for business planning, employment, and financial markets.”

Beyond calming volatile markets, Sløk notes that such a move could deliver a sizable boost to US government revenue. He estimates the plan could generate $400 billion in annual tax revenue — a figure that could help offset budget deficits without raising domestic taxes.

Have any of the economic experts ever considered, given the fact they've been wrong so many times, that they're not really that much of an expert after all?

They've had a hard time this week trying to talk down Trump's economy while at the same time celebrating new highs for the S&P, Nasdaq, and NDX,

LOL!

I used to be on an economics forum years ago.

The only thing that is certain is that economists are never in danger of losing a paycheck over economic conditions,

Trump has been “on the scene” for decades. Moving from success to success. Always doing what others said could not be done. He was president once. Very successful. Out in the wilderness for 4 years. They tried to shut him down through lawfare. They failed. He became president a second time. Wildly successful so far in his second term.

Maybe he’s a smart guy who knows what he’s doing?
Most of the Media: “Naaaaah, he’s an idiot.”

Uh duh. I know little about macro-economics, but even I know the President is an expert in that field.

When the President first announced his tariff and the stock market cratered, I started buying stock and have not stopped buying since then. I am up now 9.87% for the year, not counting the dividends.

I plan to continue my investments and have expanded to bitcoins, other alt coins, and physical gold & silver.

The 10% baseline tariff is Trump's "endgame". Dropping the reciprocal tariffs now, without achieving any trade concessions, would be caving. The only way Trump does that is if he loses the court cases he is currently fighting over tariff authority. And if he loses that case, the 10% is gone too, leaving the do-nothing congress in charge.

President Trump is successful because he is not a politician. He comes with a lifetime of real life experience.

From the very beginning, I believed that foreign manufacturers and USA importers would have to eat close to 100% of the tariffs.

Why?

Because USA consumers are the best informed and most agile consumers in the world.

Best example - every month, anti-Trump business news economists keep predicting that high retail inflation is imminent.

So far, almost no retail inflation has shown up.

They will in the short term. I doubt they will for long. And our trade imbalance is actually growing, up again YoY in May (and likely again in June). Imports are up, and worse, exports are down. So, other than a small increase in money going into federal coffers, the tariffs are having a net negative impact. They are not opening our markets to exports. At least not yet. If this trend continues, these policies will become more difficult to defend.

Sounds to me like Torsten Sløk, originally, was a "DOOM and GLOOMER" prior to Trump's WAKE UP Call! LIVE & LEARN!
