Congo and Rwanda sign a US-mediated peace deal aimed at ending decades of bloody conflict

The Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda on Friday signed a peace deal facilitated by the U.S. to help end the decades-long deadly fighting in eastern Congo while helping the U.S. government and American companies gain access to critical minerals in the region.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio called it “an important moment after 30 years of war.” Earlier Friday, President Donald Trump said at a news conference that he was able to broker a deal for “one of the worst wars anyone’s ever seen.”

“I was able to get them together and sell it,” Trump said. “And not only that, we’re getting for the United States a lot of the mineral rights from Congo.”

The deal has been touted as an important step toward peace in the Central African nation of Congo, where conflict with more than 100 armed groups, the most potent backed by Rwanda, has killed millions since the 1990s.

It’s also at the heart of Trump’s push to gain access to critical minerals needed for much of the world’s technology at a time when the United States and China are actively competing for influence in Africa.

Analysts see the deal as a major turning point but don’t believe it will quickly end the fighting.

A Nobel Peace Prize for Trump would really make these people freak out, eh?

Just is good news. It is very likely that many in both the Congo and Rwanda camps have been ready to stop the constant state of war between themselves, but could not find a face saving way to end it. That’s when the right trustworthy, third party mediator comes in handy. China didn’t give a flip at who was slaughtering whom, so long as their (China’s) trade demands were being met.

"A Nobel Peace Prize for Trump would really make these people freak out, eh?"

You folks crack me up every time you mentions this. There is no way the Nobel socialists would give the Peace Prize to Trump even he secured World peace. Just think who they have awarded that Prize. Can you say Arafat with a new terrorist attack on Israel or Obama for doing nothing while 9 months in office?

Agreed and I mentioned that with a little bit of humour and irony. Arafat got his Peace Prize and even a street named after him in France, but Ronald Reagan (let alone Trump) got basically none of that recognition despite his efforts to end the Cold War.

Well, obviously it’s not meant to be taken literally; it refers to any manufacturers of dairy products.

The Nobel Peace Prize has been severely cheapened in value. And that’s not sour grapes from me.

If President Trump can get this done, he really should get the Nobel Peace Prize. Most Americans have no clue about this conflict that has been a low grade war that has killed MILLIONS since the 1990’s...

I know the socialists in Norway would never reward of great President, but it will still be a major accomplishment.

Most people just figure Africa is not worth the trouble. This deal Trump put together is going to save a lot of lives.

I don’t know where I heard or read it but a phrase that I recall from way back has come to mind;

“Beware the peacemaker.”

It bothers me that I can’t recall where it comes from.
