MADISON, Wis. — The Madison Police Department is connecting with protest organizers to ensure peaceful demonstrations this weekend.
"It's a very open and fluid conversation just to make sure that we have all the details ironed out," said Acting Madison Police Chief John Patterson.
Saturday is being called "Day of Defiance" as people in several states host "No Kings" rallies to protest ICE raids along with President Donald Trump's polices.
Acting Chief Patterson says the department has been working alongside organizers for days.
"We've been in touch with the event organizer on Saturday. There's been great application and back and forth. And so we feel like we really understand what their goals are," said Patterson.
Chief Patterson says his main goal is to keep everyone safe.
"We've got to do our due diligence to make sure we're trying both before, during and after, to stay in good communication so that we're ensuring," said Patterson.
It's important to know that Saturday will be a busy day near the Capitol.
"We've got a loop right off the lake with the high school graduations, farmers' markets," said Patterson.
These protest come after large, chaotic demonstrations in Los Angeles. Patterson says he doesn't expect Saturday to be like LA or the 2020 protest in response to the death of George Floyd.
"I hope we never see days like that again. You know, that was a very challenging time for all of us, for everyone in our community. So we're not anticipating anything, in that regard," said Patterson.

Hubby and I are safely tucked down in the woods. We have everything we need, the gate is locked, and we don’t plan to leave the place until sometime next week.
You couldn’t PAY ME to go into Atlanta this weekend. Heck I refuse to go there even in the calmest of times. The chance of being robbed, carjacked, or murdered is way too high for me.
