Boeing stock (BA) plummeted over 5% in early trading Thursday after an Air India plane carrying 242 people crashed shortly after takeoff near the Ahmedabad airport.
The plane involved was a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, delivered to Air India in 2014, according to the aviation tracking site FlightRadar24.
Authorities believe the crash likely killed everyone on board the flight head to Gatwick Airport in London.
"We are in contact with Air India regarding Flight 171 and stand ready to support them," a Boeing spokesperson said in a statement. "Our thoughts are with the passengers, crew, first responders and all affected."
This is the first major crash involving a Boeing 787 Dreamliner since its introduction in 2011, according to a Boeing report of airplane accidents.
The crash is a major setback for the aerospace giant, which has been racking up plane orders under new CEO Kelly Ortberg. Shares are up over 20% year to date on the heels of a massive company turnaround following a brutal 2024 sparked by a "door plug” incident on an Alaska Airlines (ALK) flight.
That event triggered a wave of lawsuits, government investigations, and safety and production changes, ultimately leading to a leadership overhaul.
Boeing also came under intense scrutiny in 2019, following the deadly crash of Ethiopian Airlines flight 302. That incident followed a Lion Air flight crash just five months earlier.
Both of those crashes exposed critical flaws in the software of the 737 Max 8 jet, leading to a 20-month global grounding of the aircraft.
Shares of Boeing suppliers also sank on Thursday. GE Aerospace (GE) fell over 2%. Spirit AeroSystems (SPR) declined 3%.

By Boeing standards, 5% isn’t a plummet.
Europe will push this...maybe quietly, maybe not.
I’ll just toss this in, from May...
I suspect sabotage...................
It wasn’t a crash as much as an engine stopped mid flight.
I bet it’s a maintenance issue.
It’s Air India.
DEI = DIE
Not sure.
The normal length versions of their jets are not the ojes they have had issues with. Its when theynstart lengthening them like the longer 737-8, and this one was a 787-8, where issues have arisen.
Maybe the pilots aren’t factoring in takeoff angle properly because they normally fly shorter versions of the 787. But unless the plane has structural issues from improper design or incorrect lengthening procedures in the factory, it could easily he pilot error. Especially on the 787s because they are proven to be a solid plane for Boeing.
I suspect DEI hires or overweight.
It’s a stupid reaction coming before any investigation of the crash has been able to make an expert analysis.
It appears as though they had a complete loss of power. Didn’t appear to be in a stall attitude. One site said they only made 625 feet of altitude..............
If only one engine stopped then it wouldn’t have crashed.
Not a common failure mode
The 787-8 is the short version. The -9 and -10 are the long ones.
If it were American Airlines or British Airways I would worry about it being a Boeing problem. With Air India, it will almost certainly be pilot or maintenance errors.
Could contaminated fuel take out both engines at near the same time?
Aircraft looked like it just dropped out of the sky. Total loss of lift.
After watching the video several times it looks to me as if the plane was not configured properly for take off. There are no flaps deployed. Flaps should be 10 or 15. To me it appears there were no flaps dialed in and the planes stalled after leaving the runway.
Just watched it again. You are right. No flaps at all.
Isn’t that part of the checklist?
Another site said they only made 425 feet then went down.
RAMESH VISHWASKUMAR, SEAT 11A REPORTEDLY SOLE SURVIVOR IN AIR INDIA CRASH.
He actually walked away from the crash under his own power and suffered only cuts and bruises.
I’d bet they lost power at V1 or shortly after. In that event abort wasn’t in the cards. Possible bird strike/s. Obviously we have to wait for the investigation.
