Once seen as one of the rising stars of the GOP, U.S. Rep. Dan Crenshaw now is facing a growing list of Republicans who want to knock him out of office.

Already, six have filed to run against the Houston Republican in the March 2026 GOP primary, and state Rep. Steve Toth, R-The Woodlands, could soon join the list.

"We're trying to decide if it's best for us to continue our service in Austin or in Washington," Toth said in an interview on Monday.

He said he and his wife expect to come to a decision by early July on whether he will jump in. His entry could shake up the field.

Unlike other Republicans in the race, Toth has experience winning races. And while the others are questioning Crenshaw's conservative bona fides on social media and on their campaign websites, Toth has his own 12-year track record in the Texas Legislature that he could lean on in a potential campaign. Toth led efforts to ban critical race theory from school classrooms and end diversity, equity and inclusion programs on college campuses. It's why political science expert Mark Jones at Rice University has consistently ranked Toth as one of the most conservative members of the Legislature.
