Breaking: Supreme Court blocks Oklahoma religious charter school

Associate Justice Amy Coney Barrett recused herself from the case.

The Supreme Court on Thursday voted 4-4 to block the creation of a taxpayer-funded charter school in Oklahoma.

Catholic dioceses had sought to establish St. Isidore of Seville Catholic Virtual School as a school that would have been eligible for public funding.

Associate Justice Amy Coney Barrett recused herself from the case, according to Reuters.

The state Supreme Court in 2023 ruled 6-2 against the school, after state AG Gentner Drummond sued to "prevent the type of state-funded religion that Oklahoma's constitutional framers and the founders of our country sought to prevent."

"Why the hell did she recuse herself?"

She does as she's told, like all the rest (except Alito and Thomas).

.....

‘Virtual’ School.

Is that just COVID style remote learning via a laptop?

Need public funds for that?

Virtual school lunches, virtual playground, virtual gym class would be done from the home of the student anyways, right?

>>Why the hell did she recuse herself?

Barrett is a former professor at Notre Dame Law School, which represents the school’s organizers.

“Barrett is a former professor at Notre Dame Law School, which represents the school’s organizers.”

So what? This is stupid.

Barrett is a former professor at Notre Dame Law School, which represents the school’s organizers.

That isn't enough of a reason. She wasn't the school's president, nor did she rule on the case as a lower court judge. That is typically the only basis on which to recuse.

I know we hate Amy Coney Barrett here on Free Republic.

But it was a 4 to 4 vote. Which means one of the Republican appointed justices joined the three liberals. Do we know who that was? That justice should be blamed, since we are doing the blame game here.

Republican appointees!
If it weren’t for the disappointments, you’d wouldn’t know that they were there.

According to a commenter on SCOTUSBLOG, “ACB is godmother to one of Nicole Garnett’s kids”, while Garnett was advising the school bringing this case.

And Amy Cuck Barrett loses the chance to strike a blow for religious freedom.

Unless she wanted to prevent publicly funded mosques by precedent...

Catholic dioceses

Let the Catholics pay for their own school. That goes for every religion. Private schools should not get public funding.

I suppose it could be considered a slippery slope, in that it would open the door to other “religious” schools, e.g. muslim. Of course, that’s not why they ruled the way they did.

From the article:

The state religion is Wokeism, even in Oklahoma.
