For Catholics, the new pope’s disposition toward the Latin Mass will tell us far more about his pontificate than his views on immigration.
It didn’t take long after Pope Leo XIV, formerly Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, emerged onto the loggia of St. Peter’s Basilica on Thursday as the new leader of the Catholic Church for social media commentators on the right to begin decrying him as “Francis 2.0.”
This snap judgment was based largely on his social media history of reposting criticisms of President Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance on immigration policy, as well as a few reposts of left-wing claptrap on climate change and race relations.
So does this mean the 69-year-old Chicago-born Pope Leo is going to be the next Pope Francis? The short answer is: probably not.
Setting aside the obvious fact that Pope Leo is far more conservative on issues like abortion and gay marriage than most MAGA influencers, I hazard this guess not because I’ve discovered a trove of old X posts where he praises Trump, owns the libs, and defends the Second Amendment. I say it because in his very first decisions as Supreme Pontiff, Pope Leo appears to be far more traditional and liturgically orthodox than his predecessor. In particular, he seems to have a special devotion to the Traditional Latin Mass.
This matters a great deal more than whether he has policy disagreements with Trump over things like immigration or gun control, and is a far better predictor of what kind of papacy he will have.
Pope Francis was infamously hostile toward the Latin Mass despite its growing popularity around world, especially among young people, converts, and Catholics committed to conforming their lives to the orthodox Catholic faith. His motu proprio Traditionis Custodes restricted the celebration of the...

He already is. The Cardinals that gave us the abuses post vatican two, gave us francis and now this guy.
Why?
God displeased with 75 million abortion murders and counting, nearly a billion world wide.
You don’t have to believe in the jew holocaust to know how depraved man can be, nor look at muslim dlavery....just look at modern man.
Nice article. I hope it’s true.

So basically we have to hope Leo was (re) posting things he didn’t truly believe? That maybe Leo was pretending just to be more likeable to Francis to get into the group rather than be authentically himself and likely be overlooked?
That doesn’t seem good qualities either, for pope material, but I suppose God could have had him do that to undo some of the damage Francis did.

“I don’t know what happened when he was pope, but because the Jesuits basically kicked him out for being “too conservative.”
See, that was the narrative that John Paul II allegedly believed and was his basis for making Bergoglio a bishop, i.e., heterodox Jesuits ostracized orthodox Bergoglio. But the truth was more complicated. The reason that the Argentine Jesuits didn’t like him wasn’t his orthodoxy but rather because he was, God rest his soul, a divisive troublemaker.
“Yes I know Bergoglio [, says a Jesuit superior from another Latin American country]. He’s a person who’s caused a lot of problems in the Society and is highly controversial in his own country.
“In addition to being accused of having allowed the arrest of two Jesuits during the time of the Argentinian dictatorship, as provincial he generated divided loyalties: some groups almost worshipped him, while others would have nothing to do with him, and he would hardly speak to them. It was an absurd situation. He is well-trained and very capable, but is surrounded by this personality cult which is extremely divisive. He has an aura of spirituality which he uses to obtain power. It will be a catastrophe for the Church to have someone like him in the Apostolic See. He left the Society of Jesus in Argentina destroyed with Jesuits divided and institutions destroyed and financially broken. We have spent two decades trying to fix the chaos that the man left us.”

Because for all his faults, Francis may have recognized his own weaknesses, at least up to a point. Prevost reorganized the Peruvian church very effectively and did so with a sound, traditional Catholic theology. Francis (and the cardinals in the conclave) must have recognized that the Church needed an effective administrative reformer combined with a firm and thorough grounding in traditional theology. Hence we have a new Leo.
Exaggeration helps no 9ne. Francis was nowhere near the leftists. He ultimately did not change doctrine. But he talked too much. Pope Leo seems more of an introvert
The majority of the abuses are from the 60s and 70s
This matters a great deal more than whether he has policy disagreements with Trump over things like immigration or gun control, and is a far better predictor of what kind of papacy he will have.
This really is hopeful news...
I knew he was going to be a BAD Pope when they announced that he was a JESUIT!! UGH!!
Come on....let’s give him more than 2 DAYS!!!
Yes, Francis 2.0 would be bad. But a Francis 1.5 (open borders, climate scam ...) is also bad!
In this context it makes perfect sense that an American would succeed Francis (aka “Pope Brandon I”).
It's apparently no secret that the traditional Catholic movement has managed to survive even the open hostility of the previous papacy because of the pressure from American bishops. These bishops aren't necessarily friends of traditional Catholicism, but they've supposedly been giving an earful to the Vatican leadership in recent years by pointing out that traditional Catholic communities are the only ones that are flourishing in the U.S.
I am liking this new Pope. The burden of Francis has been lifted.
One can only hope - but Greenfield thinks differently about the guy - we shall see who is right - but I won’t bet against Greenfield....
I couldn’t agree more this guy is hiding some slimy plan. He hates Americans just wants followers and open wallets.
I meant the Francis that just died, I don’t know anything about this new guy.
