Britain is set to approve funding of up to £50million for outdoor experiments to dim sunlight as part of efforts to combat runaway climate change.
The Advanced Research and Invention Agency (Aria) will announce the funded projects within weeks, making Britain one of the world's biggest funders of geoengineering research.
Professor Mark Symes, Aria's programme director, confirmed there would be "small controlled outdoor experiments on particular approaches".
The controversial technology aims to reflect sunlight back into space, potentially providing a temporary brake on rising global temperatures while emissions reduction efforts continue.
Aria has emphasised that all experiments will be "safe by design" with strict requirements on duration and reversibility. Scientists have observed evidence supporting these approaches in real-world scenarios.
He also cited a 2014 volcanic eruption in Iceland that "spilled out a lot of sulphur dioxide", which "brightens clouds and cools the planet".
Prof Symes emphasised the need for physical data, saying: "One of the missing pieces in this debate was physical data from the real world. Models can only tell us so much."
The experiments aim to provide "critical" data needed to properly assess the technology's potential. Geoengineering has proven controversial, with critics arguing it could bring damaging knock-on effects
Some senior scientists recently called solar radiation management a "dangerous distraction" from cutting emissions, describing it as "barking mad" and akin to "treating cancer with aspirin".
There are concerns it could shift rainfall patterns vital for food production or have other unintended consequences. However, scientists are increasingly worried that carbon dioxide levels aren't falling fast enough to prevent catastrophic warming.
The looming threat of climate tipping points, such as the collapse of vital ocean currents or giant ice sheets, has driven increased interest in these approaches.

The only thing dim in this story are the people who think this will work. Its a scam to keep the government funding of NGO activist employee salaries flowing.
"Brits to make the sun dimmer. You mean turn it off entirely?"
"The project will commence as soon as it stops raining"
S**tty weather and s**ttier food in the UK are like American jokes about Cleveland. Even if it's undeserved they're guaranteed to get a laugh.
I seriously doubt Britain needs to dim sunlight. Isn’t it pretty cloudy there?
Is it just me or does there seem to be a correlation between the time we put scrubbers on smokestacks and the beginning of AGW? Maybe we should remove them, fire up the boilers and see what a little sulfur dioxide and coal smoke can do to stem AGW. Thousands of little volcanoes going off 24/7 around the globe.
Clever. If they induce another England ice age, at least the illegal Somali immigrants will pick up and leave.
This CO2 is Baaaaaaad.
These people are psychotic.
What could go wrong?
Atmospheric O2 is rising MUCH faster than CO2, but nobody talks about that... and too much O2 is just as dangerous to humans as too much CO2.
Every greenhouse on earth ELEVATES CO2 levels because far higher levels are IDEAL for plant life and growth and photosynthesis (generally anywhere between 750 and 1500 ppm... the current atmospheric level is around 422 ppm). The psychotic Left simply doesn't like more crops and trees and flowers and plant life, and want trillions of dollars to make sure that we don't get any closer to ideal levels of CO2 for plant life.
(CO2 isn't problematic for humans and mammals until about 5500-7500pm, by the way.)
THAT was MY question, too? Too much sun in Britain? Ya gotta be kidding!
“Didn’t billy gates want to do some lame brain scheme like this?”
IIRC His genius idea was to send up satellites that would unfurl mega square miles of sun reflecting plastic. Making the sunlight bounce back into the cosmos. If not Gates, I know for sure this scheme is out there.
I went up to a Canadian town about 50 miles east of Montreal where the eclipse was gonna be total and the weather was gonna be clear.

I remember the 1970s in which a plan was to mine coal, grind it to dust, and spray it on the glaciers and ice fields to increase the absorption of heat from the sun to stop THE COMING ICE AGE!

“Do you suppose we can learn enough, soon enough, to pull off a balancing act with the CO2 blanket saving us from another ice age?”

AND WE DID IT!
For half that amount, I will dim the Sun for 1/2 the day.
Someone advanced the concept of seeding a lifeless part of the ocean with iron compounds to produce more O2. It sounded better and cheaper to me than the current war on CO2. For some reason, that was deemed “risky,” but this is not. I think it’s more about political fads than science.
I gotta cook up some scams like this. I am tired of scraping by every day. Working is for chumps.
