Britain is set to approve funding of up to £50million for outdoor experiments to dim sunlight as part of efforts to combat runaway climate change.
The Advanced Research and Invention Agency (Aria) will announce the funded projects within weeks, making Britain one of the world's biggest funders of geoengineering research.
Professor Mark Symes, Aria's programme director, confirmed there would be "small controlled outdoor experiments on particular approaches".
The controversial technology aims to reflect sunlight back into space, potentially providing a temporary brake on rising global temperatures while emissions reduction efforts continue.
Aria has emphasised that all experiments will be "safe by design" with strict requirements on duration and reversibility. Scientists have observed evidence supporting these approaches in real-world scenarios.
He also cited a 2014 volcanic eruption in Iceland that "spilled out a lot of sulphur dioxide", which "brightens clouds and cools the planet".
Prof Symes emphasised the need for physical data, saying: "One of the missing pieces in this debate was physical data from the real world. Models can only tell us so much."
The experiments aim to provide "critical" data needed to properly assess the technology's potential. Geoengineering has proven controversial, with critics arguing it could bring damaging knock-on effects
Some senior scientists recently called solar radiation management a "dangerous distraction" from cutting emissions, describing it as "barking mad" and akin to "treating cancer with aspirin".
There are concerns it could shift rainfall patterns vital for food production or have other unintended consequences. However, scientists are increasingly worried that carbon dioxide levels aren't falling fast enough to prevent catastrophic warming.
The looming threat of climate tipping points, such as the collapse of vital ocean currents or giant ice sheets, has driven increased interest in these approaches.

My guess would be that Ed Miliband, Britain’s “Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero” is heavily involved with this screwball idea.
Maniacs .
Lock these lunatics up before they destroy the earth .
Madman Gates wanted to do this same crazy experiment in Sweden and they shut it down .
Another scam and if it isn’t do it to yourself while we watch you freeze to death
Another scam and if it isn’t do it to yourself while we watch you freeze to death
‘ But I’m sure that the “experts” will assure us that Sulphur Dioxide will be acid rain free THIS TIME.’
The use of scrubbers began in the 1980s and this reduced the amount of SO2 being released. This coincides with the gradual increase in global temperatures since then. In th 1950s above ground nuclear tests were blowing huge amounts of dust into the stratosphere, which cooled the earth. We stopped the dust and SO2 and now the green idiots complain it is a little bit warmer so they need 50 trillion dollars from the taxpayers ASAP.
They are hell bent on hastening the coming Ice Age.
Trees planted along every road throughout the land would take care of the heat, and CO2. I have a plan to remove salt from the oceans and save a ton of energy in desalination of water. What? The scientist can’t do that but they can remove CO2?
With ZERO confidence in the outcome.
If Britain wants to further enhance their already crappy climate, have at it. Destroy yourselves.
But don’t take the whole world with you. You have no idea of the consequences of this action and it’s affect on billions of others and other habitats around the world.
Why don’t they all just wear sunglasses.
Models are only as good as those programming them. They are NO guarantee of end result. Heck, they can't even get two weather forecast models to agree. And they expect us to believe these *climate models* are accurate?????
And at totality, there’s a NOTICABLE drop in temperature.
It’s very cool then.
Might prove more effective to launch all the mooslims into orbit. /s
So, they are going to try to make it colder. What will that do for energy use? Or maybe they are okay with people freezing to death (as long as they are native White Britons)?
Nothing wrong with a runaway ice age. Then we can dust the ice with a little carbon, and get a nice seesaw rhythm.
I sometimes think stupidity must be contagious. Although Britain giving their OK makes me wonder if all the wild weather the world has been having isn’t the result of different countries doing their own versions of this on the sly like they are trying in California.
What a joke!
Nuke ‘em...
Didn’t billy gates want to do some lame brain scheme like this? We got plenty of debris in orbit already. Fidiots!
To me, this is a Causus Belli. If Britain attempts to proactively change *MY* climate, I want to invade to stop them.
After all usually procedures of diplomacy fail, of course. But I’m damned serious. I do not intend to die in the cold and dark.
Give silver colored shades to all the boats crossing the english channel to reflect the sunlight back into space and reduce sunburn hazards for the new NHS customers.
