Harvard risks $2.2B in federal funds as it defies anti-discrimination mandates, drawing comparisons to Hillsdale's stand-alone model of rejecting government strings.
Harvard University has rejected various demands of a presidential commission on anti-Semitism.
The task force wants to persuade Harvard to ensure Jewish students on its campus are no longer harassed, or else lose its federal funding.
Harvard retorts that it won’t be bullied by Washington.
Among its other requirements, the Trump administration also warned Harvard to cease using race as a criterion in its admissions, hiring, and promotion, contrary to law.
And it also directed the campus to ban the use of masks that, in the post-COVID era of protests, have emboldened violent demonstrators with anonymity.
The administration’s order to stop race-based bias was in accordance with civil rights statutes, and a recent Supreme Court decision specifically banning affirmative action at Harvard and elsewhere.
No matter. Harvard claimed that the Trump administration infringed upon its First Amendment rights.
So, it has temporarily rejected the administration’s orders. At least for now, Harvard has lost its annual $2.2 billion grant of federal funds.
Former President Barack Obama, among others, lauded Harvard’s rejection of the demands of the administration’s anti-Semitism task force. He claimed the Trump administration’s efforts were ham-handed.
But what academic freedom are Harvard and Obama talking about? The freedom to discriminate and segregate by race in hiring, admissions, dorms, and graduations?
The freedom of 500 Harvard students to crash the classes of others, shut down traffic, and harass students on the basis of their religion or views on Israel?
Despite all of Harvard’s platitudes, its classrooms are still being disrupted. Jewish students remain fearful.
And what would Obama say if, for example, African-American students at Harvard were harassed on campus by masked disrupters?

It looks like Harvard isn’t sure they need it, either. For a month or more the gubmint has been kissing Hahvahd’s butt to at least PRETEND to repent so that the $2.2+B can be poured into H’s coffers! And it’s becoming a bit sickening. How long will our gubmint plead with H to take the largess? Does DJT approve of this idiocy?!! Cut the money off already!!!
i learned i totally misunderstood the absolute importance of the Electoral College before the course.
They have an excellent free newsletter , Primus , that comes every month.
“Harvard claimed that the Trump administration infringed upon its First Amendment rights.”
I don’t see anywhere in the Constitution that companies are citizens.
They are a legal fabrication that may have humans who have the First Amendment right to speak, so let them do so as individuals.
And that goes double for any institution with a multi-billion dollar endowment.
Cut off all funding, period.
My concern is that Harvard has already too many woke, wealthy, secular Jewish and DEI alumni who would happily finance the university in the event of any self-induced financial woes.
Finally?
We are paying Harvard over 2 billion dollars a year to promote anti-American hatred.
They have over $50 BILLION dollars in endowments. They don’t need to worry their little heads over financial woes.
The definition of stooopidity.
“Full Hillsdale” would mean being patriotic, conservative and constitutionalists. I don’t think so.
Me neither. I wonder how much of the $2+ billion federal money is for research and how much is for other purposes. And what are those other purposes?
I’m kinda slow. It’s taken years!
amen
“Will Harvard Go Full Hillsdale?”
Absolutely not. Victor Davis Hanson is out of his mind on this one, I am sad to say.
Progressives value ideology more than money.
It’s that simple. Progressives value ideology more than money.
What Harvard will do is throw out a few olive branches, perhaps give up on a DEI program or two, and then try to have their media buddies cover up everything else as if suddenly Harvard is teaching hard core religious studies as it did in the 1600s. They might even accept the Hillsdale financial situation and be independent of government money, but the PROGRESSIVE IDEOLOGY will be the driver for that.
Harvard will NEVER abandon progressive ideology. Until that happens, it cannot go Full Hillsdale. That is not in our lifetimes. It is not.
The only way Harvard goes Full Hillsdale is if conservatives started becoming college professors. I do not see that happening in this lifetime. I’d like it. I want to be wrong more than you realize. I do not see that happening in this lifetime.
Harvard has a $49,000,000,000 endowment. They don’t need taxpayer funds for their diploma mill.
