On Friday’s broadcast of NewsNation’s “On Balance,” Sen. Chris Coons (D-DE) stated that large tariffs won’t bring back steel or auto plants to his state “in less than five or ten years. And the costs of competing, of manufacturing here in the United States are still too high.”
Coons said, “There was a 100-year-old steel mill in Claymont, Delaware. We worked hard to try and save it, but, ultimately, it closed. There were two auto plants in Delaware. Ultimately, they closed. High tariffs won’t bring those plants back in less than five or ten years. And the costs of competing, of manufacturing here in the United States are still too high.”

All I’ve heard says you’re correct - finding property to build on, permits, loan approvals, building, equipment to buy, equip the plant - the list would go and on - AND find employees!! Anyone who knows how to work with their hands and mind - not a smart phone or computer!! Not a pleasant prospect! Would needs lots of time and money, industrial engineering experience just to get started.
And...why would he care?
Right, the plants won’t coma back to Delaware because of the costs and regs here. Other states seem to attract new plants but Blue Delaware with it’s high energy costs [climate, doncha know?] and Democrat control won’t ever be in the running again.
EXACTLY
We have thousands of square feet of empty plants and under utilized facilities.
Probably millions.
Reminds me of an old Simpsons joke “we tried nothing and we are all out of ideas”
Democrat. ‘nuff said.
90% of manufacturing in the USA is done by non union labor. 90%.
Mass production is chaep no matter where it is done. We are talking degress of cheapness. That is the whole point.
Answer: The average hourly pay for a UAW worker in the United States is $18.54. However, this figure can vary widely depending on the company, location, experience level, and job titl.
Rule of thumb: it takes 30 man-hours to make an average car/small suv.
Labor per car: 18.54 x 30 = $554/car + benefits. Benefits per hour are $10/hr? so total cost of labor per car is $1,200. Considering the average car costs $40K that is 3%.
President Vance is not going to scrap tariffs.
I usually don’t trust a Freeper with “conservative” in their handle because they are usually a squishy, leftist Bushie. It is similar to the phenomenon of communist countries putting “democratic” in their country’s name. For instance East Germany was officially known as the German Democratic Republic (GDR) but was nothing democratic about it.
Gotta start somewhere.
1. The labor to produce the steel and/or aluminum and/or plastic
2. The labor to produce the electronic components
3. The labor to plan, design and build the plant
4. The labor to transport the raw materials
5. The labor to transport the finished product
“Sorry to bother you with the reality of running a business, and the decisions that have to be made.”
Glad you are on task, because it is doubtful that Trump, with his many decades of building, has ever thought of your points.
How many big ticket items are non-union?
Automobiles, aircraft, heavy construction machinery, appliances, etc....
The percentage of new cars made in the U.S. by non-union workers is difficult to pinpoint exactly, but there are some insights available. About half of new vehicles sold in the U.S. are assembled within the country. However, many of these vehicles rely on imported parts, meaning they aren’t entirely “made in America”1.
Historically, non-union automakers—such as Toyota, Honda, and Tesla—have expanded their presence in the U.S., particularly in Right to Work states where union membership isn’t mandatory. This has led to a significant portion of vehicles being produced by non-union workers.
Democrat proxies are busy attacking American car manufacturer Tesla right now, I wonder what that does to car prices?
One thing I’ve noticed about this site— posters with “conservative” or “patriot” or “veteran” or “Christian” in their handles often have a posting agenda that are the opposite of those terms.
