Schumer: Republicans Seem Willing to ‘Buck Donald Trump’ on Tariff Power
Breitbart ^ | 04/04/2025 | Pam Key

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) claimed Friday on CNN’s “Inside Politics” that Republicans seemed willing to “buck” President Donald Trump by passing the Trade Review Act of 2025.

It would require a joint resolution of approval for the new tariffs and allow Congress to end tariffs with a resolution of disapproval.

Host Dana Bash said, “The veteran Republican Senator Chuck Grassley and Democratic Senator Maria Cantwell, they have introduced a bill, a bipartisan bill to require congressional approval for any new tariffs. And I’m sure you saw that Grassley said it’s necessary to reassert Congress’s constitutional role and ensure Congress has a voice in trade policy. Is that going to pass?”

Pelosi as well. She was all in favor of tariffs in the 90’s.

But Clinton was POTUS then................

In the United States, the power to enact tariffs primarily lies with Congress, specifically under its constitutional authority to:

> “regulate commerce with foreign nations” (Article I, Section 8 of the U.S. Constitution).

However, in practice:

Congress often delegates tariff-setting authority to the President through legislation. This allows the President to impose tariffs under certain circumstances—such as for national security (Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act), unfair trade practices (Section 301 of the Trade Act), or balance of payments issues.

In theory, Congress can pass a law to stop Trump's tariffs. But he'll just veto it.

Hello fellow travelers. Part of the reason the market is reacting is that the USA isn’t printing money and throwing all around the world anymore. Don’t blame tariffs. Use your brain.

How long have Schumer and Grassley been in power? What have they ever done?

DOGE is on course to reduce Fed spending by $1T. The national GDP is $29T, so that’s a pretty big chunk of cash not flowing through Dem fingers.

They can buck a veto if they want to climb out on that limb. Let them argue their point with Hamilton, he’s waiting in Federalist #12.

“The ability of a country to pay taxes must always be proportioned, in a great degree, to its commerce... A nation cannot long exist without revenues... The most obvious [source] is the duties upon articles of importation.”
