Elon Musk Says $1 Trillion in Federal Cost Cuts Will Be Finished Within Weeks
Independent Journal Review ^ | March 28, 2025 | Andrew Powell

Tesla and Space X CEO and richest man in the world, Elon Musk, has said that he will complete the task of cutting down government spending, given to him by President Donald Trump, within weeks.

According to Reuters, Musk made the comments Thursday and noted he would finish most of the work on cutting $1 trillion in spending, as soon as 64 days.

Musk appeared confident that the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) could find the savings while speaking to Fox News’ “Special Report with Bret Baier.”

Federal spending would be reduced from $7 trillion to $6 trillion, a feat that could be complete by the end of May. Because Musk is a “special government employee,” his work in the White House and with DOGE is capped at only 130 days.

When asked about his tenure and the expected completion date of the cost cuts, Musk told Bret Baier the government is not efficient, but he thinks he will accomplish that goal, nonetheless.

“I think we will accomplish most of the work required to reduce the deficit by a trillion dollars within that time frame,” Musk said. “The government is not efficient, and there is a lot of waste and fraud, so we feel confident that a 15% reduction can be done without affecting any of the critical government services.”

DOGE has already estimated that the government has saved $115 billion due to workforce reductions, contract cancellations, and asset sales. However, Reuters further reported that experts have warned that Musk will be unable to reach his goal without making cuts to programs like Social Security.

“Unless this exercise is successful, the ship of America will sink. That’s why we’re doing it,” Musk said.

Former Obama spokesman Marie Hsrf just lied to the American people on Fox News' show Outnumbered. Harf said that he probationary employees that DOGE fired could only be terminated for poor performance. That's the exact opposite of what the law says.

Here is the actual US Code.

5 U.S. Code - Part III - EMPLOYEES § 4303 - Actions based on unacceptable performance

(a) Subject to the provisions of this section, an agency may reduce in grade or remove an employee for unacceptable performance.

(b)

(1) An employee whose reduction in grade or removal is proposed under this section is entitled to—

(A) 30 days’ advance written notice of the proposed action which identifies—

(i) specific instances of unacceptable performance by the employee on which the proposed action is based; and

(ii) the critical elements of the employee’s position involved in each instance of unacceptable performance;

(B) be represented by an attorney or other representative;

(C) a reasonable time to answer orally and in writing; and

(D) a written decision which—

(i) in the case of a reduction in grade or removal under this section, specifies the instances of unacceptable performance by the employee on which the reduction in grade or removal is based, and

(ii) unless proposed by the head of the agency, has been concurred in by an employee who is in a higher position than the employee who proposed the action.

(2) An agency may, under regulations prescribed by the head of such agency, extend the notice period under subsection (b)(1)(A) of this section for not more than 30 days. An agency may extend the notice period for more than 30 days only in accordance with regulations issued by the Office of Personnel Management.

(c) The decision to retain, reduce in grade, or remove an employee—

(1) shall be made within 30 days after the date of expiration of the notice period, and

(2) in the case of a reduction in grade or removal, may be based only on those instances of unacceptable performance by the employee—

(A) which occurred during the 1-year period ending on the date of the notice under subsection (b)(1)(A) of this section in connection with the decision; and

(B) for which the notice and other requirements of this section are complied with.

(d) If, because of performance improvement by the employee during the notice period, the employee is not reduced in grade or removed, and the employee’s performance continues to be acceptable for 1 year from the date of the advance written notice provided under subsection (b)(1)(A) of this section, any entry or other notation of the unacceptable performance for which the action was proposed under this section shall be removed from any agency record relating to the employee.

(e) Any employee who is—

(1) a preference eligible;

(2) in the competitive service; or

(3) in the excepted service and covered by subchapter II of chapter 75,

and who has been reduced in grade or removed under this section is entitled to appeal the action to the Merit Systems Protection Board under section 7701.

(f) This section does not apply to—

(1) the reduction to the grade previously held of a supervisor or manager who has not completed the probationary period under section 3321(a)(2) of this title,

(2) the reduction in grade or removal of an employee in the competitive service who is serving a probationary or trial period under an initial appointment or who has not completed 1 year of current continuous employment under other than a temporary appointment limited to 1 year or less,

(3) the reduction in grade or removal of an employee in the excepted service who has not completed 1 year of current continuous employment in the same or similar positions, or

(4) any removal or demotion under section 714 of title 38.

US Code specifically excludes probationary employee dismissals from the rules of unacceptable performance.

When the so called “cost” of tax cuts are measured they multiply the annual amount by 10 years.

1,000 billion in fraud, waste and abuse of the taxpayers.

That they have found so far. Once they do deep dives into the national security mess they will find a lot more.

Glad to hear it. But I hope this is announced in an organized, thought-out way rather than him just starting to post things without coordination and then have to walk them back.

Forgive me if I keep my skeptical hat on.

1 Trillion represents 1/7th of the federal budget. I am all for cutting spending, but I am highly skeptical in 3 months they found 1/7 of the entire federal budget to cut.

************************

1 trillion is a huge number and you’re right to be skeptical.

The top 3 spending categories in the federal budget are:

Socialist Security
Medicare
National Defense

I doubt the politicians or DOGE can present a budget with 1 trillion in reduced spending that doesn’t include the “Big Three.”

I’d love to see it, but won’t be holding my breath.

This is not just about spending cuts -it’s about allocating America’s economic resources towards productive act ivies and away from the non productive, counter productive and outright destructive activities they are currently spent on. The impact that these cuts will have will be more than the sum of the budget cuts alone.

Yeah, I’ve always wondered why the DOGE debt counter and the US debt counter were over a hundred billion dollars different?

In any case - Musk is optimistic. Very.

I don’t believe most of the crap being presented by any media, let alone political partisans on X.

And when I “say any media” I mean all of them, liberal, conservative, foreign, etc.

You make a very good point. The current federal economic model can’t be maintained and a readjustment must take place.

The producer and the essential must be given priority over non producer & nonessential.

About 800 billion more and he’ll have balanced the federal budget.

About half done.

No maybe Congress can do their job and go after the other part? Maybe, just maybe they could try to stop spending like drunken sailors Congressmen?

Crazy Democrats are holding a nationwide (worldwide) "Tesla Takedown" assault tomorrow, March 29, against all Tesla dealerships in the U.S. and many of its dealerships in the world including Vancouver, Hamburg Germany, and London. Insane Democrats call it a "Day of Action" that they're holding in honor of Democrat U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett's birthday on Saturday, March 29. Even more liberal "protests" against Tesla are scheduled for April across Europe.

Northwestern U. professor Tim Calkins said that, A year ago, protests at Tesla dealerships would be "inconceivable" and the protests "indicate how far the Tesla brand has fallen."

One of the primary sponsors of the "Takedown Tesla" organization actually calls itself the "Troublemakers."

But they're not "protests" -- Democrats are clearly committing domestic terrorism.

Alexander Edwards, President of Strategic Decisions, said Musk needs to ... disconnect from his DOGE work, or he needs [to] step down from leading Tesla.

I'm guessing that Edwards guy is a Tampon Tim-voter.
