An IRS tax examiner went on the record with O’Keefe Media Group and blew the whistle on the agency.
“We can’t do anywhere close to what the American people think we can,” David Nelsen, Tax Examining Technician for the IRS, told James O’Keefe. “We have very antiquated systems. They aren’t integrated. We’re basically handcuffed.”
David Nelson said there has been virtually no funding to improve anything at the agency.
“There’s been no funding for decades to try to improve anything,” Nelsen said. “When funding is provided, it’s put towards little Band-Aid issues instead of the big problem of the whole.”
“We also have very antiquated software. We use a software called Integrated Data Retrieval System (IDRS),” Nelsen added.
David Nelsen said the outdated software has led to a bloated workforce and delays in tax processing.
“We could probably reduce the size of the IRS substantially with changes, programs, a centralized inventory system, replacing IDRS,” he said.
Last month the IRS fired 6,000 employees as President Trump works to reduce the federal workforce.
The IRS is planning to cut up to 50% of its workforce.
“I’m not afraid of losing a career,” Nelson said. “I’ll fall on the sword if it means I can help the American people and help everyone else at the IRS who are doing their jobs.”

Shut it down.
He is correct. The IRS uses the IDRS system which is a joke.
Absolutely. Shut it down, we don’t need it.
With Congress not cutting much, it is time for Americans to stop paying taxes. Hoping Trump can do an exec order reducing or eliminating income taxes. It is time.
Cry me a river. They were doing fine when Lois Lerner was investigating tea party groups to kill financial support. What’s O’Keefe’s angle?
Several years ago, we were hit with a penalty for being short about $12.00 (twelve) from a previous tax year. They way they applied payment meant we were short again, because they took some of the money from a years payment to make up for the previous year we were short. (and I never understood why)
It was a mess.
I think through 4 phone calls, I spent a minimum 6 hours on the phone all total, most of the time on hold, trying to get it resolved. One time I called, I drove to the grocery store, did all my shopping, drove home and was on hold the entire time. I would have sent them a check for $50 just to end this fiasco.
Between all those times we kept getting the nasty letters about taking our house and everything.
There was not a local office with people in it. And we live in a big city. Eventually it got resolved but the time I wasted waiting on this I will never get back - and that was worth way more than $12.
I have a similar story...................
You first.
Yeah...I know...that is why I said Pres Trump needs to be involved.
My accountant always advise filing a paper copy of your return. These are much harder to review, so they get put on a bottom stack.
Several years ago I remember the IRS started paying Microsoft to keep updating Windows 7 after its expiration, not sure the IRS ever upgraded.
This is also why I mail hardcopies of my tax return instead of electronically.
The tax system is sadistic and furthermore is easily weaponizable, and has indeed been repeatedly weaponized. Either reason alone should be sufficient reason to utterly dismantle it.
But we’re ruled by partisan sadists.
I got in an argument with our accounts payable over a vendor late fee of $25. Since it was a government position, we didn’t pay late fees and so the checks sent to the vendor never matched the invoice & would get applied to the wrong account. Told the manager we either pay the late charge or have a monthly $500 meeting to discuss. He paid the late fees.
Elon’s AI will take care of that!
This is where the efficiency part of DOGE should kick in.

Just shut the mofo down!
When I think of the IRS I think of the many tens of millions of immigrant in America and how they come from countries and cultures where lying, cheating, stealing and corruption is part of their culture, a part of their people and it’s backwards “nation”, the West and America is like a candy store to them with our systems built largely on trust and self compliance.
Anyone who deals a lot with immigrants and immigrant stores has picked up a sense that much of what they do is reflective of their homeland business and bribe based governments, shady, mysterious, hidden, and very unlike the little local businesses and owners that we knew in 1970 America.
Any wonder why home invasion robberies came from the cash rich immigrant communities? You can throw in the hidden economics and legal practices of the tens of millions of illegals during the last 50 years of America.
The way a friend of mine explained it to me is IRS has modern data storage systems. The problem is to cut over everyone all at once the IRS would have to shut down for a long time to get all the data straight and validated. It would be like trying to change the oil and filter in a running engine, is that even possible?
So it is a catch-22.
