Calif. weather expert issues dire warning on Trump's reported mass firings

A California weather expert is one of many issuing a dire warning after reported firings within the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which also includes the National Weather Service.

In a post on X Friday, Daniel Swain, a former UCLA climate scientist who now works at the University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources, said the firings are alarming.

“If there were to be large staffing reductions at NOAA and NWS—[as] appears is now indeed underway, with credible reports of much larger further cuts on the horizon—there will be people who die in extreme weather events and weather-related disasters who would not have otherwise,” he said in the statement.

Swain said slashing NOAA and weather service jobs could jeopardize the public’s access to free and accessible weather alerts and information.

“There have been multiple cases in just the past several years where NWS predictions and real-time emergency warnings saved hundreds (or even thousands of lives) in a single event,” Swain said in the statement.

“It may mean that meteorologists are put in a really difficult position where they’re trying their best and they’re still not able to keep up,” he said.

Other divisions of the NOAA such as those that improve the American weather model, could also be detrimental losses if included in the firings.

The reported firings come as the Trump administration’s new department led by Elon Musk, the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), has cut jobs, including thousands of National Parks workers.

Folks ran the number in earlier threads.

This is a 7% staff cut.

There is not an organization on the planet that would be crippled with a 7% staff cut.

I hear AI can do weather forecasts really really well.

Unless these people are literally working inside the weather satellites, their positions are likely redundant.

“This is a 7% staff cut.”
If the cuts are in the department that blames weather on CO2, or that measures the size of the ozone hole over Antarctica, I’m not worried. I will wear lots of sunscreen next time I visit Antarctica.

When has any politician in California been right on anything? They brought us Palosi, Schiff, Swallwel and many others.

They care so much, maybe they should volunteer to help people.

Oh but he got a cushy university job.

Such a crock of bs. “If certain types of people were to be fired in the future, it could lead to.....”

Who knew that government leeches were the absolute most valuable members of society.

Reality: These users turned the government into a full employment for democrats agency.

Most of these weather bozos are environmental wackos. They go around naming snowflakes, raindrops and wind breezes. They’re nuts.

All of a sudden, every gov’t employee is “essential” or people will die. People will die from “weather events” or will be “eaten by a bear” in a National Park. A 7% reduction in staff somehow results in losing those precise people who can save lives. Somehow, I just don’t think this is the truth.

People making poor choices often die in disasters. We can't bubble wrap everyone. Besides nobody cared when SleepyJoe let criminals and drugs across the border that did kill people and not a peep from the MSM.

As if Wx info can’t be found elsewhere.

What they really need to get rid of is the police version of NOAA aka the weather police.

After 9/11 Bush allowed all fed agencies to have their own force in order to take workload off the FBI.

The only thing I recollect about the weather police is when they conducted a SWAT raid on a store in FL because the owner was selling a protected/disallowed species of coral.

In fact, if all such Fed enforcement went back to the FBI, maybe they’d have a lot less ability to play domestic enemy.

It is a 7% cut from a staff that was increased 7% over the past few months.

The service hasn’t improved over those months so it should not suffer at all.

How many were working from home using AI generated weather forecasting software?

Though I was never a NOAA or NWS employee, I used the same computer generated and raw data information to analyze weather over a 40+ year career. The only thing different lately was the including of climate change porn in the reporting.

Trust me. The weather will be fine without a few hundred new hire employees at the antiquated NWS.

Want to know what’s alarming? A 36.5 TRILLION national debt, more than $350,000 per taxpayer, which now requires more than 1 trillion dollars a year (rapidly increasing) to service, and which threatens to send the country into a Weimar style hyperinflative death spiral that will make the great depression look like a Sunday picnic. That’s what’s alarming.

If your life is so dependent on a bloated agency of the government to save you from the falling sky you are an idiot. How many of them will ever get fired when they fail to save you?
