New York lawmakers are discussing a bill that would give Gov. Kathy Hochul more time to set dates for special elections, which could leave Republican Rep. Elise Stefanik’s red North Country seat empty until the summer.
Democrats who control the state Assembly and Senate may introduce the bill as soon as Friday and vote on it Monday, multiple officials familiar with the talks told Gothamist. The discussions were first reported by the Capitol Pressroom.
If enacted, the proposal would allow New York’s Democratic governor to frustrate national Republicans, who currently control the House of Representatives by a margin of 218 to 215. President Donald Trump nominated Stefanik as ambassador to the United Nations, setting her up to become the third GOP congressmember to resign her seat if confirmed by the Senate. She appeared at a confirmation hearing last week, but her confirmation vote has not yet been scheduled.
Two other GOP congressmembers from Florida resigned their House seats after Trump named them to his cabinet, leaving their posts vacant until special elections scheduled for April 1 in the Sunshine State. If Stefanik is confirmed and steps down, too, the pending New York legislative maneuver could prolong the vacancy of her seat, which Republicans are favored to win…

Is it crucial to assume the UN role immediately ?
Where would her vote best be put to use ? Congress ? Or the UN Security Council ? Are they even in session ?
Democrat shenanigans and a bit of bad luck could easily tip the House to the Democrats. Then all of Trump’s agenda items are stalled.
Plus, the House could then conduct all sorts of witch hunts against Trump and other Republican officials. Ugh.
It was a mistake to pull Republicans out of the House. Is it too late to cancel Stefanik‘s nomination, and find someone else almost as good?
Right! Leave her in her NY seat!
Pretty smart wouldn’t you say?
Trump was aware of the razor thin majority we’d have to work with. Still he may be thinking 2 moves ahead. That is worthy of discussion more than how he could have nominated someone else to keep the seat safe.
Looks like “Our Democracy” is the same as ever.
Brings me back to ‘16 when he put Zinke from Mt. at interior. He couda beat Tester in ‘18. Could be wrong.
That’s a way to support democracy./sarc
Hope republicans file suit and get an injunction to stop the change in law. This will result in a district not being represented for an extended time.
Voters in her District should file suit in Federal court. A US Congressional seat empty for two years?!?!?! Despicable!
Trump took a big risk in taking someone from NY district.
Sometimes Trump makes stupid moves like this one. And trust me, I'm on the MAGA train.
The UN is worthless. Trump needs to find a Stephen Miller clone. A loyalist.
And then forget about the UN.
Elise Stefanik probably hates Congress after doing time there for 10 years. Who can blame her. So gets her UN job for 3-4 years. Gets many fame points there. Then makes some big private sector money.
No blame on her!
This is the ONLY thing the Dem Party does. No meaningful policies. No nothing but trying to rig the system so that they cannot lose. It is where all their energy goes.
Where would her vote best be put to use ? Congress ? Or the UN Security Council ? Are they even in session ?
All good valid questions. Perhaps she would be more valuable in her current position as a congress critter.
I’m not so sure plucking 3 republican congressman out of such a slim majority was a good idea.
“It was a mistake to pull Republicans out of the House. Is it too late to cancel Stefanik‘s nomination, and find someone else almost as good?”
She should pull her resignation until she is confirmed. In the interim, Trump should name a Czar like Obama did. There is precedent.
Because....Democracy!
This is why Trump shouldn’t have picked anyone from the house or Senate.
Plucking those House members was an abysmal idea. Even with fair elections the outcome is uncertain at best. And, dems will do everything humanly possible to rig those elections, including wrecking the economy.
Trump moves in straight lines—he declares his intentions and then does them. That strength could turn out to be a weakness.
And leaving the people of that district without representation for that much longer. Sounds like a threat to democracy.
