Desperate search for survivors after American Airlines jet is downed in collision with military chopper over DC

A desperate search for survivors is underway after a military helicopter collided mid-air with a commercial plane near Reagan National Airport in Virginia Wednesday night.

Flight 5342, a PSA Airlines Bombardier CRJ700 regional jet operating for American Airlines and traveling from Wichita, Kan., collided with the military chopper while approaching Runaway 33 at the Washington airport around 9 p.m., according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

“I have called over to my counterparts at the White House, and I can confirm that President Trump has been made aware of this situation,” Press secretary Karoline Leavitt told Fox News’ Sean Hannity.

It appears the airliner was on a routine final approach when rammed by a Blackhawk military chopper.
IF so, who was flying that chopper and what was its mission that would put it into the flight path of a known final approach to a busy major airpor????

It is a bit tricky to tell from the video, but I think you’re correct. It looks like the airplane was in the right spot/direction for the approach to land and then for some reason, the helicopter just crossed paths. Why would the chopper be in the airspace for an approach or departure?
