An Arizona man was arrested days before the inauguration of President Donald Trump for threatening him when he was president-elect.
Secret Service agents say Rene Ortiz made the threats through documents he left at the federal courthouses in Phoenix and Tucson, where he asked for the “court to execute the newly elected POTUS.”
Agents said Ortiz, who claims to be a U.S. Marine combat veteran, brought a letter to the Phoenix federal courthouse on Nov. 5, the date of the 2024 election.
In the filing dropped off at the courthouse, it reads, “I chose to execute the newly elected POTUS by firing an M-16A2 Service Rifle with a magazine of 6 rounds. The Court and the Defendants were warned to withdraw from their campaign.”
Ortiz also said he wants the court to allow him to “make an attempt to shot [sic] at the Candidate with an M-16A2 service rifle with a magazine of 3 rounds from a distance of 300 or 500 yards, the rounds targeting the head not the ear of the Candidate.”
There was no mention in the Nov. 5 document which candidate Ortiz was referring to, but the ear comment likely refers to the assassination attempt on then-candidate Trump at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Jul. 13, 2024. A bullet struck Trump’s ear at the event as he turned his head to the side to refer to a chart.
The Secret Service said Ortiz delivered two other documents to the Tucson federal courthouse, where he again said he would be entitled to shoot “THE INCOMING FRAUDULENT ELECTED POTUS FROM 300 OR 666 YARDS AWAY WITH 666 ROUNDS FOR AN M-16A2 SERVICE RIFLE AT THE INAGURATION [sic] ON JAN 20TH, 2025.”
