Vance will resign Senate seat at midnight to clear way for inauguration

Vice President-elect JD Vance on Thursday announced he will be resigning from the Senate at midnight, in order to be sworn in on Jan. 20.

Vance was elected vice president in November as part of President-elect Donald Trump's Republican ticket. Ohio GOP Gov. Mike DeWine will select a replacement for Vance, who has only been on the national stage for three years, in the coming weeks.

The vice president-elect thanked Ohio voters who elected him to the Senate in 2022, and promised to work with Trump as vice president to enact the "undeniable mandate to put America first, both at home and abroad," that Americans voted for.

“To the people of Ohio, I extend my heartfelt gratitude for the privilege of representing you in the United States Senate,” Vance said in a statement first shared with NBC News. “When I was elected to this office, I promised to never forget where I came from, and I’ve made sure to live by that promise every single day.”

DeWine has not given a clear timeline for when he will announce Vance's replacement, or announced who is on the shortlist for the position. However, Ohio's Lieutenant Gov. John Husted is considered the leading candidate, though he has not promised to serve if asked.

Other Republicans who may be in the running include former Ohio GOP chair Jane Timken, state Rep. Jay Edwards and state Treasurer Robert Sprague, per NBC.

The announcement comes as DeWine and other Republican governors prepare to meet with Trump at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida on Thursday night.

A 2 tour Marine who went to the nations top law schools on the GI bill should have no trouble implementing the MAGA agenda.

DeWine is a mixed bag, more so than most. Husted would be fine but he might want to be running for governor in a couple years. Beyond that idk of any high visibility gop’s right now. We have some good representatives, but who knows. We’ll find out soon enough.

One problem. We shouldn’t be gambling with DeWine’s proclivities.
