New York Politician Is Advocating for... Secession? Didn't We Already Try That Once?
Red State ^ | 27 November 2024 | Ward Clark

It seems like this issue keeps coming around after every election; the side that loses calls for a national divorce, that is, or just for certain states to leave the union. In the latest such example, following the Republican wins in the 2024 election, New York state Senator, Liz Krueger, a Democrat from New York City, is proposing that the state of New York secede from the Union - and join Canada.

Fine, let them go, but give each county the option of leaving or staying.

At present, New York City is the financial capital of the world. It would be a good acquisition for Canada in spite of its social problems.

NYC will be replaced by Dallas for finance. Or Miami.

Make them gone.

Dallas? Probably.

Miami? Maybe.

At present, Atlanta and Charlotte are engaged in a life or death struggle to see which city emerges as the financial capital of Dixie. I'd place my money on both, with Atlanta in the lead.

Staten Island is VERY HAPPY with being part of the US.

So they should prepare to go to war with 300,000 Americans of Italian descent before they finish their plans.

I’m guessing upstate NYers wouldn’t be happy either.

And I know it’s a fantasy and will never happen.

But this buffoon thinks everyone would be on board.

WRONG.

Trump didn’t lose NY by 30 percent. He lost by 12 percent.

Clueless.

Canada’s weirdo prime minister would welcome the New York weirdos.

But as was mentioned elsewhere, let the conservative New York counties remain if they wish.

Big deal! Let them go, they are ungrateful people and we have nothing in common. As for the good people in New York, surely we in “flyover country” will willingly accept the “true” Americans from the formerly great state of New York.

If you look at a map, it becomes apparent that Staten Island would be better off if it became part of New Jersey.

Tere is a classic “New Yorker” cover by Saul Steinberg that shows a New Yorker’s view of the rest of the country.

It appears to me Canada is on the verge of becoming a totalitarian country and would probably start taxing New York for all they could get out of her. I’d bet a lot of those financial businesses would be rushing to get out.

I agree - we desperately need New York and California. The changes to sanity must come from within.

“At present, New York City is the financial capital of the world. It would be a good acquisition for Canada in spite of its social problems.”

There are several things that make NY a financial hub. It’s in the United States and subject to American law. It’s the companies located in NY that do the financial business. Those companies are moving out already. The move started during the Covid craziness and NY’s capricious lawfare against Trump has accelerated the move. It’s possible that a big chunk of that financial business has already left. What is left would flee even faster if they thought they’d be under Canadian laws.
