Sticky absentee ballot issues: NC voters receive sealed envelopes due to Hurricane Helene-related moisture

Some North Carolina voters have reported receiving absentee ballots with both envelopes already sealed, likely caused by moisture and humidity from Hurricane Helene and other rain events.

There’s no word on exactly how many counties or ballots have been affected.

In an email, North Carolina State Board of Elections spokesperson Pat Gannon wrote “Chatham and a few other” counties have reported problems, likely “caused by moisture and humidity from Hurricane Helene and other rain events.”

Voters in Durham County have also reported issues to WRAL News.

“It’s not a good experience,” said Durham resident Liz Allen Green said. “Let’s just say that.”

Green took a cell phone video showing both envelopes for her ballot sealed.

“[It’s] to the point where we can’t really open them without ripping the envelope, and that was very concerning because we’re worried that, potentially, it could be considered tampering, or if the envelope seemed ripped because we put our ballot in there,” Green said.

I don't believe I have ever received return envelope that was "sealed" like what they say is happening here.

Humidity levels where this is happening is not extreme at all. Actually pretty low this time of year.

Something is amiss.

Gosh. Has the American South ever experienced this “humidity” thing before? I bet it’s a real shock to them.

I tend to believe them.
Last summer I was receiving sealed envelopes with my bills. I steamed them open to pay my bills.

Durham county is the dirtiest- the one county still counting days after the election- why mcrory lost to cooper. And durham and raleigh did NOT get helene whatsoever. just rains as normal. This is Fraud.

Send sealed envelopes to republican applicants only to invalidate their ballots. Clever, and the probable back up plan is for the USPS to trash ballots from republican areas.

How hard is it to go down and vote in person? Any Republican who trusts the mail needs to have their head examined

Those ballots will be tossed - but ballots where the signatures don’t match, 100s of ballots that come from the same house, ballots w/o signatures or a late date far after the election - all of those will be counted.
