Fact checking falsehoods about FEMA funding and Hurricane Helene
npr ^ | October 7, 2024 | Stephen Fowler

Rumors, misinformation and lies about the federal government’s response to Hurricane Helene in the southeastern United States have run rampant since the storm made landfall, especially around funding for the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The claims have become so widespread that FEMA set up a response page to debunk many falsehoods around how disaster funding works and what the agency’s response has been.

As of Sunday, FEMA says it has provided more than $137 million in assistance to six states in the southeast, including 7,000 federal personnel, nearly 15 million meals, 14 million liters of water, 157 generators and more than half a million tarps. Politics In many instances the disaster response to Helene has been politicized The agency also says more than 3,000 North Carolina residents have been rescued or supported by more than 1,200 urban search and rescue personnel, with recovery efforts aided by National Guard and active duty troops. North Carolina has also received $100 million in federal transportation funds to rebuild roads and bridges washed out by the storm.

Republicans, especially former President Donald Trump, have sought to wield the storm as a political tool against Vice President Harris with less than a month to go before Election Day. Trump has repeatedly attacked Harris and President Biden as doing a “bad job” handling the storm’s aftermath without specifics, instead using misleading math to complain about immigration and foreign aid.

“They’re offering them $750 to people whose homes have been washed away,” Trump said Saturday at a rally in Butler, Pa. “And yet we send tens of billions of dollars to foreign countries that most people have never heard of. They’re offering them $750. They’ve been destroyed. These people have been destroyed.”

The destruction and in cases elimination of roadways has certainly made Helene a bad storm.

It’s also clear that the Admin was caught flat-footed. Preparations and staging of gear and supplies is Continuity Planning 101. I believe a candid assessment is that Harris has suffered vs been helped by the federal response.

I’ve also seen, unfortunately, a lot of sensational (and BS) stories on our side of the fence. That is counter-productive.

All that said, I m praying - not just for those impacted - that Trump will absolutely shine with Milton.

Why? It’s literally heading north of Mar-A-Lago. If Trump isn’t too distracted, he has staged tons of supplies and personnel in Florida.

Once this beast of a storm does its business, and the govt screws it up (these are the people who brought you the DMV and Afghanistan), Trump could totally shine.

NPR... Fact checking...

A blatant contradiction in terms...

This arm of Pravda still sucks at the taxpayers teat...

Another of dozens of GOP campaign promises of elimination over the years that was a bald-faced lie...

These days, any person or group who calls themselves "Fact Checkers" are not interested in presenting the truth, but are "checking" the facts:
as in the second definition of verb (used with object):

2: to restrain; hold in restraint or control.

$137 million? The white house press secretary was spreading misinformation today and bragging that it was $200 million and dared to say that anyone in the press who question her, was spreading misinformation.

No doubt that most of these supplies are stolen from normals trying to help. We have gov officials shutting down volunteers, confiscating supplies to be inventoried, and even arrested.

Local police, fire and FEMA are all in on it. We will find donated supplies in buildings a year from now. Be armed while trying to help, not from normal thugs but government thugs with badges, full force of the government. Be aware that good people are trying to get to those in need but they be 3-5 counties over in jail due to not having all the government papers need to travel the kings roads, required to give the local, state, federal government the supplies you needed. Saving people with your own helicopter is now illegal.

..nearly 15 million meals, 14 million liters of water, 157 generators and more than half a million tarps.

I wonder how much of this stuff was stolen/confiscated from privateers at checkpoints.

And here I always thought it was National PENDEJO Radio.

And I don’t mean pendejo in the nice Spanish way, but in the NASTY MEXICAN WAY.

The collapse of their fraudulent funding will follow the death of their deception. But it takes time.

If NPR says so, it’s presumptively false.
