Chicago mayor names new school board after entire panel resigns amid a fight over district control

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson appointed a new school board Monday, days after all seven members resigned amid an escalating fight over control of the public schools in the nation’s third-largest city.

Johnson has been trying to oust Chicago Public Schools CEO Pedro Martinez, who was named to the job in 2021 by Johnson's predecessor, former Mayor Lori Lightfoot. Johnson, a former Chicago Teachers Union organizer, has clashed with Martinez, including over how best to close gaps in the district's nearly $10 billion budget. Martinez has declined to resign, citing the need for stability in the district.

Rather than step into the fray, all seven members announced their resignations on Friday — a stunning move during the tenure of a mayor who has touted his experience with schools and education equity in the largely low income district.

“I’m confident that these new candidates will work to lead CPS into the world class school system that our children deserve,” Johnson said during a news conference announcing the appointments.

Many of the new appointments won't last long, as Chicago is poised to hold its first school board elections next month, installing a 21-member hybrid board of elected and mayor-appointed members until 2027, when it will be fully elected.

The shakeup comes as contract talks between the city and the powerful teachers union have stalled. The district has offered 4% raises this year, and between 4% and 5% raises in each of the next three years, while the union has sought 9% annual raises.

After the Democratic-led Legislature rejected Johnson's requests for more state funding earlier this year, he pitched taking out a $300 million short-term, high-interest loan to cover costs. Martinez refused, calling it fiscally irresponsible.

OK, All politicians lie and everyone knows they lie. But to promise or imply that somehow Chicago is going to somehow have a ‘world-class school system may be up there with the most outrageous.

How about promising that graduates of CPS high schools can read and do math at at least a sixth-grade level? After that is achieved we can move on to say, 8th-grade level. World class might have to wait for a while.

Before the advent of DEI Democrat socialism in Chicago, you could at least count of the Irish to keep things running!

Now? Better move to the suburbs!

CPS and the CTU should be charged under the RICO statutes.

The CPS is a total racket for its employees and a total failure for its students, and with Conehead’s appointments to the board it will only get worse.

See the reference below for how poorly its facilities are used (numerous schools at under 25% capacity) and how poorly its students are served (most with student proficiency in math and reading in single digit percentages): https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVzBF9IVQx9zM0KGf2qXf9MqlUKuGvHYaST2EJ4v3oZH493qcYXBmMnzs6bYciuO4EhSZPOMmri0dzzBA5vSq8GTfCdv1nX6nSNQETj5rhnMrykDacfoSb0EwE3BWXygCncyAPEFtcC8n8u96V0S1LpJNXftlS0NFYcrFfFD6PYCwQ6S4_6kL3/s1388/Chicago-Public-Schools-most-empty-schools.1.png

—”Now? Better move to the suburbs!”

The head of the Chicago Teachers Union did exactly that!

Davis Gates’ total income tops $289,000.

Davis Gates let her Chicago water, sewer, and trash bills pile up to $5,579

Davis Gates pressured lawmakers to kill a bill providing school choice for low-income students, while sending her son to a private school.

Records show she checked a box confirming the house was her principal place of residence. During roughly the same time period she also owned a home in Chicago on which neither she nor her husband sought a homeowner’s exemption.
