How Florida Keeps Electricity Plentiful and Rates Low
Wall Street Journal ^ | October 4, 2024 | Mario Loyola

Posted on 10/05/2024 4:55:30 AM PDT by karpov

Electricity rates in U.S. states have diverged sharply in recent decades. In 2004 residential electricity in the five most expensive states was only twice as expensive on average as in the five most affordable states. Today it is 160% more expensive.

What explains the difference? State policies. Eight of the 10 most costly states have enacted renewable portfolio standards, “net zero” carbon-emission mandates, and regional cap-and-trade schemes. All eight are controlled by Democrats.

New York gets special honors. The Empire State has refused to develop the prodigious shale gas resources that have enriched Pennsylvania. And it has blocked construction of new natural-gas pipelines, depriving New Yorkers—and New Englanders—of affordable electricity.

Among the most populous states, Florida stands out as an island of sanity in a sea of government madness. Under continuous Republican governance since 1999, the Sunshine State took advantage of the shale boom, prioritizing natural gas over renewable energy. That has kept electricity prices low.

Florida relies on natural gas for 75% of its electricity, more than any other large state. That’s remarkable because of the five largest states, the other four—California, New York, Pennsylvania, and Texas—all have significant natural-gas reserves, while Florida has none. Yet compared with Florida, residential electricity is 27% more expensive in Pennsylvania, 60% more expensive in New York and 137% more expensive in California. Even pro-energy, GOP-controlled Texas has more expensive electricity than Florida, partly because of its large renewable energy sector, which makes its grid costly and difficult to operate.

My SECO electricity is, and has been for years, 11.3 cents/Kwh.

This guy needs to work on his math skills. Double is 200%. 160% is not more than 200%.

What is this nonsense of which article speaks? I live near Orange County/Lake County line- we have some of highest rates around thanks to Duke !! Compared to most municipalities or counties in central Florida. Our bill increased over 75% since this downhill nonsense in country ramped up during Covid

No, if something is 100% more, that is double. Therefore, 160% would be well more than double.

Not all wine and roses in the sunshine state.

There’s plenty of hazards that are literally life threatening.

Florida is the lightning strike state capital of the US......there are sharks, water moccasins, sinkholes, rip currents, giant roaches, the state bird is the mosquitoe, hurricanes and the tornadoes that hurricanes spawn, and the latest....MALARIA.

And let’s not forget the Senior drivers....AND alligators.

So folks would do well to understand all that before even considering visiting......much less moving there.

Here’s my theory on how Florida Man came about, Freedom has gotten to be such a rare thing when someone experiences a whole lot of Freedom all at once, it overwhelms them and makes them do crazy stuff.

Kind of like a bad trip on LSD or some other narcotic, Freedom seems to have a similar effect on certain people.

No state is exempt from Al Gore’s religion:

“Base load affected facilities that follow the CCS pathway must meet a second phase standard based on 90% capture of CO2, using CCS, by 2035”

“Baseload affected facilities that follow the low-GHG hydrogen pathway must meet a second phase standard based on co-firing 30% low-GHG hydrogen by volume by 2032 and a third phase standard based on cofiring 96% by volume low-GHG hydrogen by 2038”

“must”

Imagine what your future electric bills would look like under Kamala and her successors.

It is my understanding that FPL is building solar panel farms like crazy.

“Florida...not only a free state”

The State of New York had far more freedom when I was young than Florida has now.

I suspect DeSantis only relaxed the Covid restrictions because the Florida courts would have made the state reimburse for business closures.

It is absurd to close a store that has three customers per hour for the purposes of respiratory infection control and let a store with 200 customers per hour remain open.

Florida has a Public Service Commission that is friendly toward investor owned utilities by assuring a stable and adequate rate of return on investment. This is balanced by strong oversight to guard against abuses of the consumer and get power restored quickly after hurricane damage. The result is that Florida’s investor owned utilities are on solid financial footing, can borrow cheaply for major projects, and can manage their operations for efficiency and reliability.

My Florida electricity bill has tripled since Biden was installed as the meat puppet. We don’t use a lot of electricity and keep our AC on 82. I don’t see how people with large houses can afford to pay their bill.

We got you beat by a few cents. WREC is about 9.5 cents/kWh.

Oddly, I think both SECO and WREC buy electricity from Duke.
