A team of mountain mules has been delivering critical humanitarian aid to North Carolina citizens who have been left stranded by Hurricane Helene's catastrophic destruction. While hundreds of roads remain unusable due to storm damage, mud slides, and flood debris, the Mountain Mule Packer Ranch has deployed their "beloved" pack mules to deliver supplies to areas inaccessible by vehicle.
The four-legged heroes have been delivering food, water, diapers, and critical medical supplies such as insulin to desperate families in the state's mountainous regions, which are hard to reach, as reported by the Associated Press.
"They call them beasts of burden, we call them our beloved mules. They are capable and willing to work in many conditions most won't. They are not stubborn.....they are wise, and require respect," the company wrote on Facebook. "They have had many roles in their careers, from hauling camping gear and fresh hunt, pulling wagons and farm equipment; to serving in training the best of the very best of our military special forces, carrying weapons, medical supplies, and even wounded soldiers."

Hurricane Helene was the deadliest hurricane to hit the United States in years, impacting millions of residents in Georgia, North Carolina, and Tennessee. Citizens have been unable to communicate due to no power and internet connections. Thousands of people have died, and officials expect the death toll to climb. Many are still missing.
Tech billionaire Elon Musk announced Tuesday that his company, Starlink LLC, would provide Starlink internet for free to all citizens in all locations affected by the hurricane.

"Seamless access to text, voice, and data for LTE phones across the globe. The Starlink Direct to Cell launch campaign is underway."
SpaceX: "On January 2, 2024, we launched to orbit our first six Starlink satellites with Direct to Cell capabilities. Launch and early tests of the technology were all completed without issue. On Monday, January 8, less than 6 days after launch, we sent and received our first text messages to and from unmodified cell phones on the ground to our new satellites in space using T-Mobile network spectrum. This validates that our link budget closes, and the system works! The Direct to Cell network will expand Starlink’s vision by providing ubiquitous connectivity and seamless access to text, voice, and data for LTE phones and devices across the globe. Text service begins this year, followed by voice, data, and Internet of Things (IoT) services in 2025."
Apple added satellite comms in the iPhone 14, but no satellite voice comms, just SOS, text emergency services, request roadside assistance, message friends and family, and share your location.
Sea Planes, you stay low, slow, and follow rivers and lakes. All seat of the pants flying. No night ops of course.
The enjoyment in flying is fading from the trade or craft IMHO.
Ping. Do you have a mule or am I mixed up?
Mules have the smarts of a donkey and the height of a horse.
What is great about this is the American ingenuity of figuring out how to get supplies to their fellow Americans.
Feds/FEMA are worthless. Unless you are a coastal elite, you will be on your own when a natural disaster happens.
So far 685+ missing. Hopefully, it's just that there's no way to reach them and that we'll find them eventually.
I notice the response is different compared to New Orleans. I guess mountain folks in Appalachia are self-reliant.
No kidding! The Army Corp of Engineers would love nothing MORE than to take on this assignment! Those guys and gals are jonesin’ to fire up the skid steers and front end loaders! They can build bridges ANYWHERE in ANY conditions! They’d have this taken care of in weeks - not months and years!
Hey, Brandon? Get you head out of your @ss and try to act just a little bit ‘presidential,’ could ya? *SPIT*
“ What is even funnier is they are might be delivering to place that have no electricity.”
If they can deliver some gasoline, a car’s battery will run one.
