At least 64 dead and millions without power after Helene’s deadly march across the Southeast

PERRY, Fla. (AP) — Massive rains from powerful Hurricane Helene left people stranded, without shelter and awaiting rescue Saturday, as the cleanup began from a tempest that killed at least 64 people, caused widespread destruction across the U.S. Southeast and left millions without power.

“I’ve never seen so many people homeless as what I have right now,” said Janalea England, of Steinhatchee, Florida, a small river town along the state’s rural Big Bend, as she turned her commercial fish market into a storm donation site for friends and neighbors, many of whom couldn’t get insurance on their homes.

Helene blew ashore in Florida’s Big Bend region as a Category 4 hurricane late Thursday with winds of 140 mph (225 kph).

From there, it quickly moved through Georgia, where Gov. Brian Kemp said Saturday that it “looks like a bomb went off” after viewing splintered homes and debris-covered highways from the air. Weakened, Helene then soaked the Carolinas and Tennessee with torrential rains, sending creeks and rivers over their banks and straining dams.

Western North Carolina was isolated because of landslides and flooding that forced the closure of Interstate 40 and other roads. All those closures delayed the start of the East Tennessee State University football game against The Citadel because the Buccaneers’ drive to Charleston, South Carolina, took 16 hours.

At a time like this, who cares about a football game? What's more important, rescuing people or watching some guys vie for possession of a leather balloon?

They’ll probably extend the election in those states so everyone is able to vote and knows how many more votes they need. State of Emergency declared and extended.

Kentucky was hit too, by rain and winds up to 50 MPH. So far my neighborhood has gotten 4 inches of rain, and the power is out in many areas, but not where I live, fortunately.

I'm a few miles north of Knoxville. We dodged what could have been a flood this region that hasn't likely seen in a few hundred years. The majority of rainfall followed the Tn/BC state line which hit the rivers that form in NC like The French Broad and Pigeon river as well as Nolichucky rivers. Those three are where the most damage was done in Tennessee and NC including the collapse of I-40.

If the same amount of rain had went into southwestern Virgina where three more major ones form up Holston, Powell, and Clinch Rivers, it would have hit the entire upper Tennessee Valley from Kingsport to Chattanooga from Smokys to the Cumberlands.

TVA which was created for flood control has adopted some very dangerous policies as homes popped up along the east Tennessee Lakes. Norris Lake {Clinch & Powell}, Cherokee {Holston} and Douglas {French Broad, Pigeon} were built as upper tributaries dams with water levels dropped substantially toward summers end and Fall and stay at low pool levels until Spring rains begin. Thus creating a huge buffer for preventing disasters. They have purposely to appease mansion land owners and developers held the lake levels high year round starting about 15 yeas ago.

All the rivers mentioned are mountain rivers and the lakes mountain lakes though at a lower elevation. Douglas full pool level is 990 ft above sea level hit 1011. Norris full pool is 1020 it is almost at 1015 & by now should be 990-995 ft. I've seen Norris full several times now and slucing water in December and January. Very reckless and dangerous and when they do this the discharge flow rate is about that of an average flood before TVA built the dams. TVA doing this has destroyed many river bottoms due to erosion from heavy water flow.

I am worried about how this will affect the election. Even if the government doesn’t affect it in some manner, these poor people may not be in the frame of mind to think about voting and even if they are, they may no longer have a physical polling place to vote.

All these people talking Florida, try Swanania, or chimney rock, or Hendersonville, or even try to drive into Asheville.

I’m in greenville, 48 hours no power, 5 mile radius no power.
2 gas stations open because of generators.

I got 9 trees in my apt complex down, out side the entrance powerlines down, road closed.

Street lights almost all failed.

Mudslides, Floods.

No looting I know of yet.

All the people devastated by the hurricane won’t get 1/10th the funds they give Ukraine.

That’s how you know your government doesn’t care about its citizens.

They only care about getting themselves, their friends, their lobbyists, and their donors more money and power.
