Newsom Signs Bill Banning Single-use Propane Cylinders for Camping

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) signed a bill this week to ban one-pound, single-use propane cylinders, meaning that only more expensive reusable cylinders will be available in the state.

The San Francisco Chronicle reported:

Disposable propane canisters like the dark green ones used with camping stoves will soon be phased out in California, after Gov. Gavin Newsom signed legislation Sunday requiring all one-pound cylinders sold in the state to be reusable or refillable starting in 2028.

Between 4 million and 7 million of the single-use cylinders are sold in California each year, according to an estimate from the California Product Stewardship Council, a nonprofit local government coalition that sponsored the bill.

In 2022, Newsom vetoed a near-identical bill, SB 1256. In his veto letter, Newsom raised concerns about prohibiting sales of disposable cylinders “without a plan for collection and refill infrastructure.” The governor also urged the legislature to consider “market-based solutions” over an outright ban.

“Are cylinders made for propane torches banned, too? (They are actually interchangeable “

During the covid shortages I could not find the green camping cylinders anywhere, but there were lots of the taller torch cylinders everywhere.

I wondered if everyone had impaired IQ from shooting up with all the mRNA stuff.

The "more expensive reusable cylinders" weigh a lot more, which is why they're not used in camping. That said, most campers have figured out how to refill the "single use" cylinders.

There's no reason that the one pound cylinders are single use except rent-seeking.

Agree but then again using propane isn’t camping.

I would never rent out my RV. Just what I need is some bozo wrecking it. Plus the wear and tear. Every bump is entropy. The amount of work I would spend fixing it would exceed the amount of money I could make renting it. This is the meaning of “cast not thy pearls before swine”. The RV is the pearls and the renters are the swine.

Although there are kits available to refill the cylinders, the DOT (the agency responsible for pressurized cylinder regulations) prohibits the transportation. I have looked at a few of these refillable cylinders and have a couple of observations. None that I have seen are made in the USA which means good luck if you are injured with any lawsuit as only the importer can be effectively sued. The devices that I have seen for DIY to “safely” refill the reusable cylinders have an hex screw valve to make sure that you don’t overfill it. That valve will vent propane over your hand while you try and close it.

It is the weather, dude.

As to the cylinders, refillable ones will allow water entry — which will lead to rusting and explosion. It is the same phenom with refillable air cylinders. They are single use ‘cause if you try and refill they blow up. Luckily, in their case, just air.

I haven't seen a California plumber use propane for decades, they use an acetylene torch.

I could get behind banning obnoxious Harley Davidsons (especially with stereos).

Leaf blowers gas or electric.

Gas for the same reason for banning Harleys.

Gas AND electric for blowing other peoples shit on to other peoples property or into the street.

Get a broom and a rake you inconsiderate assholes.

have a couple of RV tanks that are past their expiration date, and they won’t refill them.

See if there is a propane wholesaler near you who can inspect and recertify them. Depending on your area, this may be possible. I can get 5-year recertification on my tanks and I have two that are more than five years beyond the original 12-year expiration (one tank is 19 years old, the other is 22). It comes down to the valve type generally, the older type won't get a recert due to safety reasons but newer valve types can be as long as the tank is in good shape and doesn't currently leak.

I don’t use them but for preparedness I have about 120 of the 1 pounders and about six of the 20 pounders.

The 1 pounders are for using in 2 different types of shiny, clean camp stoves if the need arose.

True. When you camp out you buy the refillable type, same for gas grills. While we don’t camp, we do grill. Miss the taste charchol imparts, but he wanted gas.

I should have added that I bought 96 of those one pounders at a clearance price of $1 each at Walmart about 3 or 4 years ago, sweet, I get the impression we won’t be seeing that again for a while.

Probably wants to ban propane altogether and mandate rechargeable lithium batteries with detachable solar panels. :j

To be quickly followed by a ban on camping altogether - unless one presents a current Sierra Club card and proof of Democrat voting history.

I wonder what plumbers will use to solder copper pipes?

Mapp gas. Hotter, faster.

Better yet, PEX tubing or copper compression fittings with copper pipe.
