Assault rifle allegedly used by Ryan Wesley Routh in attempt to kill Trump is revealed
The New York Post ^ | 09/23/2024 | Emily Crane

The alleged gunman accused of trying to assassinate Donald Trump at his Florida golf course had 11 rounds loaded in his assault rifle, federal prosecutors said Monday — as they revealed the first close-up photo of the weapon.

The image of the Soviet-designed SKS rifle that was found stashed in Ryan Wesley Routh’s alleged sniper’s nest at the West Palm Beach golf course on Sept. 15 was included in a detention memo filed Monday. The rifle has been modified with a detachable magazine, a modern stock and a scope to make it more accurate to shoot at long range.

The serial number on the rifle was “obliterated and unreadable,” prosecutors alleged.

Routh’s fingerprint was also allegedly found on the weapon, the court papers state.

The feds found the firearm — as well as backpacks and a GoPro camera — soon after the 48-year-old suspect fled the hiding spot where he’d allegedly been waiting to take a shot at the former president.

*** Authorities who searched his car subsequently found six cellphones, including one that showed a Google search of how to travel from Palm Beach County to Mexico, the court papers charge.

They also found a list with dates in August, September and October – as well as venues where Trump had appeared or was scheduled to appear, prosecutors said.

1) talk about burying the lede.

2) The SKS that Routh had is NOT an assault weapon:

No pistol grip
No select fire
No telescoping stock
No flash suppressor or threaded barrel etc.

It's a deer rifle, at best.

Will this be the first ever actual 922r case brought to trial? (regarding the inflammatory wording chosen, 922r’s wording is “adaptable for sporting purposes” but trying to write THAT for consumer reading requires several paragraphs.

Heck, there are whole SITES dedicated to explaining this cryptic law and counting the bits and pieces necessary to make an SKS compliant.

Maybe he tossed in a TAPCO part just to make sure, before he committed a ton of felonies on top of the gun felonies he’d somehow escaped in past, he wouldn’t be “non-compliant.” Ha.

For a guy making a living out of being a handyman and roofer, he seems to have had access to considerable resources.

Fingerprints. So, no viable shoot ‘n’ scoot.

The Gun Grabbers have yet again moved the goalposts and now consider any semi-auto chambered in any Military or LE round with an external magazine to be an "assault weapon".

No kidding. Lots of travel money, money of the magnitude you do NOT make in those jobs.

Trump’s game would have taken him well within the effective range of a scoped SKS. It doesn’t have to be a sniper rifle to be good enough for the job. Still, weapons selection by the two (or three) would-be assassins is definitely on the amateur side. When someone who does know better tries this and the Secret Service is as remiss as it’s been, look out.

How about a Dragunov SVD for an even more Soviet style?

Yah, those Russians. Except, I am sure the Ukes have Soviet Weapons aplenty and it is more than plausible that when he was over there he trained on this weapon and was sent by those who made sure it found its way into his hands.

An SKS with an after market stock.

You would think Trump rated at least an Accuracy International precision rifle.

I'd be embarrassed to get smoked by that POS rifle - and so should the Secret Service.

For 3.2 billion a year, I expect more.

The rifle could have come from Ukraine or some other shithole.

That’s a very good and plausible connection, Flip. I hadn’t thought about that.
