TOP MAINE DEMOCRAT acknowledged on Thursday that there’s likely not enough time to change the state’s Electoral College rules before the election to counterbalance Nebraska Republicans trying to alter their own state’s rules to benefit Donald Trump

Under the radar but important last minute rule changes from the states. Picking away at crucial votes.

If this ends up taking her down, it’s obviously going to be a Russian plot.

I like the Nebraska and Maine methods. Thus cheating only affects the district it occurs in (which are likely lost anyway) and the two at large electors. Stuffing the ballot boxes in Philadelphia or Detroit won’t flip all the electoral votes in the states, just two in each state

When stuff like this works in their favor, they’re always taking the “aww, too bad, so sad” position, with the aid of the media, of course.

But if something like this was to work against the democrats, you KNOW there will be a huge clamor for lawsuits, and I would not be surprised that those hypocrites will be asking congress NOT TO RATIFY their delegates on the next Jan.6th (or whatever January day it lands on )

Apparently the rule was adopted about 1996. If it is such a good idea, why don’t the Democrats adopt the same plan in Illinois, California, or New York?

The odds are small that the results will come down to a close result where this will matter, but it cannot hurt to cover this contingency. Also, the Democrats find a way to break all the rules, so watch the 90-day rule get waived.

Republicans should threaten to do it if Kennedy’s name not removed from swing states.

This would be a good system if all 50 states used it.

The biggest problem for the major parties if it were nationwide (and maybe this is not a problem) but regional third parties could score some electoral votes and become enough of a factor to throw the election to the House.

I would support a constitutional amendment mandating the Maine/Nebraska method nationwide, but until that happens partisan considerations are more important.

Pennsylvania should have done this the last time that they had the governors mansion and both branches of Congress, but they pussed out and wouldn’t do it.

It would’ve put a complete and to Philadelphia controlling this entire state during the presidential election!!!

I like the Nebraska and Maine methods.

I do, too, except . . . (see below).

. . . just two in each state

Actually, four in each state. If they cheat enough to carry the total vote for the state, they get to the two extra electoral college votes. In fact, it doesn't even take cheating in states like Illinois where Chicago is all that matters (for what would be the extra two votes).+

The exception to the value of the Maine/Nebraska method is that the all-or-nothing on Electoral College votes has kept us to a two-party system (neglecting for the minute the uniparty issue). Systems that allow proportional votes on things like this lead to fractionated representatives where only coalition governments work. And in our system where the president must have a majority of the electoral college or the vote goes to the House of Representatives, we'd have all presidential elections decided by the House of Representatives. And they would know it, so they would (as all politicians do) cling to that power by doing everything they could do keep the representatives fractionated.

There is no easy answer. I'd definitely be willing to give the proportional electoral college vote a try nationwide - with the sole additional caveat that it would have to be decided by the States. I would not support a mandate from the Federal Government except in the form of a formal, ratified Constitutional Amendment (and if I had a silver bullet to make a Constitutional Amendment that's not the one I would spend it on).
