SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said on Thursday that the rocket manufacturing company intends to offer a trip to Mars to anyone who volunteers in the future but warned that the journey might be uncomfortable.
What Happened: “In all seriousness, SpaceX hopes to offer travel to Mars to anyone who wants to go…” Musk wrote on social media platform X in response to former European Union Commissioner Thierry Breton with whom he has a history of sparring now and then.
However, the journey to Mars, Musk warned, will be like a “long sea voyage.”
“….it will be like a long sea voyage in centuries past – dangerous and uncomfortable, but great adventure!” Musk said.
.........
Earlier this month, Musk said the first Starships will head to Mars in two years once the next Earth-Mars transfer window opens.
The first launches to Mars in 2026, Musk then said, will not have a crew onboard and will be aimed at testing the flight's ability to land intact on Mars.
"If those landings go well, then the first crewed flights to Mars will be in 4 years," Musk wrote, pegging the first crewed Starship flights to the neighboring planet for 2028. A self-sustaining city, he said, should be ready in about 20 years.

They need to Shanghai the homeless like in days of old.
Time someone went to Mars and back this world would not be here.
So, by the time they get to Mars they will all be gay?..............
Hop Sing Was
Well, any guy that wears his hair in a pig tail is suspect.........
Uh ... no.
In a long sea voyage of centuries past, unless you were a slave chained below deck, you always could go topside to catch a breath of fresh sea air. Or to hurl over the rail. For a trip to mars you’re talking +/- nine months (each way) living in a walk-in closet, with no relief for the claustrophobics.
Which begs the question, what preparation have they made for disposing of the body if someone croaks before they get back to the Third Rock. Because if they do this long enough, it’s bound to happen.
Honestly, he will have no shortage of volunteers. I wouldn’t do it but there are thousands of people out there who’ve dreamed of space travel and would jump at the chance to be part of the first crew to Mars
The spacecraft has something known as an "airlock." Quite useful for disposing of waste matter.
Bagpipes optional.
Regards,
I’d go if there were no democrats allowed
And as long as the Holodecks are working, claustrophobia won’t be an issue.
A city on Mars? Not gonna happen.
“They need to Shanghai the homeless like in days of old.”
They did that to the convicts. There were no “homeless” back then. Those were called “bums”.
Elon Musk knows a lot more about the current state of technology than I do.
However, what’s needed is a continuous propulsion system which would cut this journey down I believe, to a few weeks or months.
They’ve discussed concepts for that for decades.
Leaving out protective lead rooms for economy could cause everyone to croak from a solar flare shot in their general direction or even on Mars after getting there. It’s nasty out there beyond the moon and Earth’s magnetic field.
Under certain circumstances, I’d go ... for a round trip. And at the end:
“We pray for one last landing
on the globe that gave us birth
To rest our eyes on fleecy skies
and the cool green hills of Earth.”
Props to anyone who recognizes the verse.
True.
I’d say too easy, but that would show my age.
I think you should stay and let the Democrats go.
You know.
And I know you know.
And that’s enough.
